Giants tight end Jake Ballard

In my Super Bowl for the Clueless, I listed a few of the players to watch for in the Giants-Patriots game from a hotness factor. Neither team really grabs me all that much and Cyd was miffed that I said the Giants were better looking. Now comes along Whitney Jefferson on Buzzfeed with a thorough look at her choices for the hottest players come Sunday.

Jefferson said she knows nothing about football, but her comments by each of her choices are witty. Such as: Kicker Stephen Gostkowski: “Most Likely To Be Cute, But Ultimately Boring In Bed.” Or: Eli Manning: “Most Difficult To Find Hot Photos Of On The Internet”

Now that the game is almost near, I would love to know:

Outsports: How did you meet David Testo?
Phillips: I met David out socially one night in Miami Beach.  He and his friends started a conversation with us and we just seemed to hit it off right away.  I actually didn’t know about his soccer career or the fact that he had just come out publicly until the next day when he and I were hanging out.

What was your inspiration for the photo shoot?
Since we were in beautiful and warm Miami Beach, what better way to capture that than to be on the beach itself?  2eros is a great Australian swimwear and underwear brand that I’ve worked with and I decided to shoot David wearing swimwear from them.  David’s athleticism was enough inspiration for the shoot.

How did his place as one of the very rare out pro athletes play into your interest in him as a model? And how did it play into how you shot him?
David arrived in Miami right after he came out back in Montreal.  Miami was meant to be his break from the media attention that would likely ensue.  I feel honored and lucky to have been able to capture him at this pivotal time in his career, as well as in the gay-athletes movement.  I think the simple and classic image of David standing proudly on the beach holding a soccer ball sums up his character – strong, confident and proud.

How was he to work with as a model?
The shoot was so laid back and fun, full of great energy!  It definitely helped that we had met just a few days prior and had developed a level of comfort and great rapport. This wasn’t the standard ‘model’ shoot, so I wanted him to really just let go and be himself, which he did.

What stood out to you about Testo during the shoot?
I was impressed with how comfortable and easy he kept the tone during the shoot.  I’ve worked with all sorts of personalities when shooting, and this one will remain one of my all-time favorites.  No egos or attitudes to deal with, just the two of us on the beach having a good time.  This is the kind of shoot that reminds me why I love my job!

There’s been a long-standing fear of the bulge in American culture. Why do so many American men feel the need to denegrate Speedos? Because our culture says men should not publicly wear anything in which you can see the size or shape of the package. Beckham’s H&M underwear ad sadly complies with that bullshit.

In this commercial’s case, they’re trying to sell underwear without showing the “money shot.” They show the waistband, they pan across Beckham’s tattoos, there’s a shot of his butt. But when they pan around to his front side there’s a well-placed hand; when the camera scrolls down his body, it fades to white just before showing his bulge. God forbid they acknowledge that Beckham has something on the front of his body between his thighs! It would make the average American male run from his TV screaming!

Instead, H&M will spend millions of dollars to sell their underwear…without showing the most revealing part of their product. Good luck with that.

Steve Weatherford in Men's Fitness

Men’s Fitness has a spread this month on an NFL player with 5% body fat, who’s the strongest guy on the team pound for pound. That player is a punter, of all people, Steve Weatherford of the New York Giants. “His physique is just ridiculous,” said a fellow punter. “He makes us look good even though none of us look as good as him.”

The New York Times profiled Weatherford’s fitness regimen and it is impressive. He can leg press 1,000 pounds for reps, squat 475 pounds and bench nearly 400 pounds. Then there is his diet.

He eats about 200 grams of protein a day (the Food and Drug Adminstration’s daily recommendation is 50 for a 2,000-calorie diet), loading up on scrambled egg whites, bunless turkey burgers and lean-ground-beef lasagna. If he and his wife go to a swanky restaurant in Manhattan, he often eats beforehand, then has a salad, “while my wife — who is 5-7, 110 pounds and works out like twice a year — crushes a steak,” Weatherford said. “She’s amazing.”

One thing we’re proud of at Outsports is introducing our readers to up-and-coming athletes. Two years ago it was then-Florida wide receiver Riley Cooper. After his big game for the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night, this post got a lot of attention so here it is again…

Florida has a male model posing as a wide receiver. Riley Cooper has been one of Tim Tebow’s go-to guys this season for the top-ranked Gators. And Cooper, a 6-3, 215-pound senior, is easy on the eyes. He has let his hair grow out since his early years with the Gators and it’s a look that works. Ross Ford of Scotland

The Rugby World Cup just ended in New Zealand, with the host Kiwis taking the title with a hard-fought 8-7 win over France. In honor of the event, Dean Knight, a gay fan, has put together his all-hot team from the event. His list on Facebook caught the eye of the New Zealand Herald:

The page had 273 likes and lots of discussion on the wall about which players should be selected. It also features plenty of pictures of topless rugby players. …

Knight said, “The team has a good balance of shapes and sizes, with some big and beefy players, some hirsute, some clean-cut, some suave and sultry. And even a twinky Justin Bieber look-alike.”

David Pocock from Australia was put on the list, both for his looks and for his support of gay marriage. Openly gay referee Nigel Owens was on the list in the ref slot. The Herald noted that Kiwi Dan Carter was left off the list. “The view was taken that the underwear man is now past his prime,” Knight said. I love it — controversy in an all-hot list.
