Members of the Tufts University crew team were  suspended, then reinstated for a race this weekend after they wore tank tops at a school social event that read “check out our cox.” The athletes at the Boston-area school were suspended by their coach, then reinstated by the school’s president, who cited free expression. From the Tufts Daily:

The tank tops in question have the phrase “check out our cox” written across the middle, a reference to the “coxswain” (pronounced coxun) in crew who sits at the front of the boat and gives instructions to the other rowers. Below the words is an image depicting four rowers in a boat and a coxswain in front of them who appears to be shouting directions. …

After a student anonymously reported the team’s Spring Fling shirts as a bias incident to the Dean of Student Affairs Office, the rowers involved were suspended for this weekend’s New England Championships.

In lifting the suspensions, school President Tony Monaco said this in a letter to the athletes:

I know that the coaches themselves strongly support free speech, and that they acted not in a spirit of censorship but in the interests of team-building. The issues, however, have become inextricably intertwined in this case. Under the circumstances, I believe that your suspension to date, and the written apologies you have offered for breaking team rules and for any unintentional offense your tee-shirts caused, constitute sufficient consequence.

The suspensions were a major overreaction to some standard collegiate humor and double entendre, with the only complaint coming from one anonymous person. This is nothing compared to how proudly fans and students of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks wear shirts that boast “You Can’t Beat Our Cocks.”

Coby Fleener

Stanford tight end Coby Fleener is reunited with Andrew Luck as the Indianapolis Colts selected the two former teammates with their first two picks in the NFL Draft. Our Grindr preview of the NFL Draft had Fleener looking for “More Good Luck,” and that’s exactly what he got. With Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme gone from Indy, Fleener was a great pick-up.

Strangely, the video has been removed “because its content violated YouTube’s Terms of Service.” Not sure what term that was, but it has also appeared below…with a Parental Advisory notice. Maybe Karger thinks kids should see two men kissing at the end of the video? Bizarre.

With the NFL Draft this week, we decided to check out the prospects via the best way for a guy to find the relationship he’s looking for: Grindr. Profiles for some of this week’s draftees highlight everything they have to bring to a relationship, no matter what somebody’s looking for. Soft hands? We’ve got those. Lean bodies? Yep, done. Cox? Yes, we even have a Cox.

Check out the NFL Draft Grindr profiles we “dug up.” Most of the text for the athlete’s Grindr profiles was taken directly from what scouts have said about the player. “Versatile” indeed.

I’m kind of with McCarthy on this. I’m not offended by the Kiss Cam poking fun with gay kisses, but it’s kind of a tired joke and I’d probably rather not see it if possible. It would be one thing if they actually featured gay couples along with the “joke” gay kisses; That would be much easier to swallow. But have you ever seen them focus on a gay couple who embraced for a kiss? And even if you did, how quickly would that camera move on to the next couple? Two years ago the St. Louis Cardinals refused to show gay couples kissing.

McCarthy is 28, from Glendale, Calif., and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2002.

Gronk’s response brought the  house down… 

I asked a Boston sports reporter before the Super Bowl about his impression of Gronkowski. He said the kid’s an incredibly talented, hard-working goofball. The fraternity guy everyone on campus falls in love with. Whether he’s dancing shirtless after the Super Bowl, appearing with a porn star or wanting to “F— Tebow,” he earns that description.

There are a lot of pro athletes who would never hint of having sex with another man. Kudos to Gronk for not having that hang-up.

If you have been on Facebook for even a minute this past week, it’s been impossible not to see the latest Internet meme — Texts From Hillary — a Tumblr filled with imaginary texts from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The site was created by Stacy Lambe and Adam Smith, two gay guys, who had the idea on the rooftop of Nellie’s, a popular D.C. gay sports bar.

Clinton loved the site so much that she met with Lambe and Smith yesterday, posing for pictures and supplying her own text caption. From Metro Weekly:

Lambe marvels: “For her to … walk up to us and know us by name and shake our hands and greet us and everything, it was just absolutely divine.”

Smith: “Then, she said, ‘I have this idea for a picture I want to do.’ Her assistant gave us our phones back because they have to take them when you go into her office. They gave us our phones back and we just took pictures pretending that we were texting.”

With her sunglasses on.

“Right.”

Lambe says, “It was a wild moment.”

The sunglasses are a big part of the meme, since the meme is based on a photo of Clinton in sunglasses looking fierce. The meme is already played out, with Lambe and Smith posting this today:

After a week that included 32 posts, 83,000 shares on Facebook, 8,400 Twitter followers, over 45K Tumblr followers, news stories around the world, Renee Montagne from Morning Edition saying “ROFL,” a Maureen Dowd column, and a tweet from ?uest Love, we think it’s time to stop while we are ahead.

As far as memes go – it has gone as far as it can go. Is it really possible to top a submission from the Secretary herself? No. But then when you get to text with her in real life – it’s just over. At least for us. But we have no doubt it will live on with all of you on the Internet.

I just think it’s cool this was all cooked up in a gay sports bar.

And excited Tim Tebow says he is excited to be part of the exciting New York Jets. At an exciting press conference last week to introduce the exciting wunderkind to an excited press corps, excitement was high as he excitingly took the podium to answer some excited questions about being the last, most exciting part of Gang Green. He was more excited than the Pointer Sisters and shared his excitement with all of his excited fans.
