Columnist doesn’t want to see men kissing

Let’s give David Whitley of MLB Fanhouse the award for “Most Homophobic Column Written By a Guy Who Claims He’s Not Homophobic.” Whitley penned an offensive piece of drivel where he discussed how bothered he was by the St. Louis Cardinals possibly showing a same-sex kiss on “Kiss Cam.” I’d like to take the socially [...]

Reporter: Nothing sexy about locker rooms

A huge shoutout to Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post’s D.C. Sports Blog who demolishes all the myths and half-truths about what it’s really like for a reporter in a sports locker room. This comes on the heels of alleged harassment of a female reporter by the New York Jets. Writes Steinberg: To me, NFL [...]

Media roundup: Homophobia in sports

Homophobia is suddenly a hot topic with the sports media this summer. Here’s a rundown of some of the latest: Vancouver Sun: Acceptance of homosexuality still has a long way to go in pro sports. Bleacher Report: ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’: The plight of gay athletes in sports. Miami Herald: Sadly, gay athletes still afraid [...]

Algerian Player Slaps Female Reporter After Loss

The USA’s victory left a bitter taste of defeat in many Algerians yesterday.  However, Algerian player Rafik Saifi took his frustrations out on a reporter for an Algerian newspaper, Asma Halimi.  Spotting her during the postgame interview sessions, Saifi walked up to her and slapped her face.  Halimi then returned the favor and smacked Saifi [...]

NY Post calls Lysacek “ice queen”

The New York Post, rag that it is, ran this headline on their website regarding the finale of “Dancing with the Stars,” in which Evan Lysacek lost to one of the Pussycat Dolls: “‘Dancing’ Doll Beats Ice King.” Yet, in their print edition, there was a slightly different headline… I’m not sure if this is [...]

Hockey Kid Mikey: Anatomy of a deception

Mikey, the teenage hockey blogger from Minnesota, seems beyond a reasonable doubt a late-fortysomething man from a Minneapolis suburb who likes travel, food, was married and has sex profiles on two gay hookup sites. His deceit was discovered when he fell in love with Jimmy, a contributor to his blog, and his story started to [...]

Radio show on homophobia in sports

KCRW in Santa Monica is having a half-hour show devoted to homophobia in sports on its “Politics of Culture” show, airing live online Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern. It sounds like an interesting show and a terrific panel, with host Diana Nyad and her guests Billy Bean (out ex-big leaguer), Pat Griffin (one of our [...]

Chad Ochocinco, Evan Lysacek on DWTS

ABC has announced the celebrity lineup for the new season of Dancing With The Stars. As usual, it includes people with connections to the world of sports. I have no idea how this will play out on the dance floor (and don’t really care) but I have a couple of observations: It makes perfect sense [...]

GLAAD eliminates their sports desk

It was coincidental irony that within 24 hours of posting our interview with Neil Giuliano talking about the success of GLAAD’s sports initiatives under his direction that GLAAD closed its sports desk and laid off their sports director, Ted Rybka. When reached for comment, GLAAD spokesperson Rich Ferraro would not offer any insights on the [...]

Neil Giuliano talks sports and GLAAD

For four years, GLAAD had a president in Neil Giuliano who was a strong advocate for work in the sports world. He created the sports desk, hired Ted Rybka to run it, and worked constantly to bring members of the sports media into the GLAAD fold. Giuliano left GLAAD last year, and I caught up [...]

ESPN confirms: Johnny Weir is a real man

In case you were wondering, ESPN has confirmed that Johnny Weir is a Real Man. I guess maybe some people were wondering, since the figure skater dragged reporter Jim Caple (and yes, I’m sure it was ESPN’s idea, but that’s not how it’s played) for a mani-pedi during his interview with Weir for a “who-to-watch” [...]

Transsexual sportswriter Mike Penner dies

Sportswriter Mike Penner of the Los Angeles Times has died at 52. His body was found at his home and suicide was the suspected cause of death, the paper reported. Penner, a very gifted writer, made headlines in 2007 when he announced he was transsexual and changed his name to Christine Daniels. In 2008, he [...]

This year’s Out 100 is sports-less

The latest Out 100 has been released, and the glaring omission this year (there’s always at least one) is the complete lack of sports figures in the list. The most glaring of all those possible names is Brian Sims, who came out on Outsports earlier this year and who has since become a valuable advocate, [...]

The incredible shrinking gay media

I’ve noticed the disappearance of some gay-sports media outlets in recent weeks. Gay.com’s Sports blog has apparently been abandoned as nothing’s been posted there since Aug. 10 and emails to the editor got bounced back. Gaysports.com hasn’t been updated since June, and that wasn’t about sports. Now comes news that Window Media, which owns the [...]

Outsports on ESPN Thursday

I am scheduled to appear on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” program Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern. The subject is gays in sports in conjunction with October being gay and lesbian history month. Former lacrosse player Andrew Goldstein is also scheduled to appear. I am not sure what their angle is yet. Share on Facebook
