With myriad playoff spots on the line I figured I would go public with my Week 17 picks in relevant games. Post yours and let’s see who did better.

Tel Aviv shows some love for its gay jocks

Tel Aviv is feeling that gay spirit. The Israeli city is assembling a team of gay jocks, apparently the first of its kind in the country, for the World Outgames next July in Copenhagen. Team organizers want 30 athletes and city officials are studying how much of the tab they will pay to have the [...]

GB2C: The food and fat of the South

One of the foci of our trip across the country is to find some of the best food in the country; Three days in, we have not been disappointed. Between some incredible meals, we’ve also partaken in the Waffle House (great cheap waffles) and Cracker Barrel (with surprisingly tasty pancakes). And in every restaurant we’ve [...]

Arena football latest victim of recession

A few days ago, the Arena Football League denied rumors that the 2009 season would be suspended due to the economic meltdown. A legitimate denial or just postponing the inevitable? Today, the league announced that the 2009 season will be canceled.
Matt Hennie recently blogged here about the NFL’s recent announcement of layoffs and the WNBA’s [...]

Beach volleyball players get married Down Under

Natalie Cook, (photo left) an Australian who won beach volleyball gold in 2000, has married Canadian Sarah Maxwell, her girlfriend and fellow beach volleyball player, the News in Australia reports. The wedding took people by surprise, the paper said, especially since Cook’s orientation had been largely unknown.
While the wedding came as a surprise to some, [...]

History: Life’s photo archive

This shot of a rowing team throwing its coach into the water (full image below) is from 1946 and comes courtesy of Google hosting Life magazine’s awesome photo library. It’s cool if you want to see Joe Namath shirtless (great if you like hairy chests) or images from the Civil War. The archive goes back [...]

From Charleston to Wheeling, W. Va’s reeling

Dirty Dozen, my Top 12 teams in college football after two weeks:

1. Oklahoma (2-0) — The Sooners doubled-up the Bearcats on their way to an easy victory in Norman.  This was a good victory but fans are right to be concerned about the 365 all-purpose yards given up to one player (WR Marshwan Gilyard).

U.S. Open: May the Best Williams Win

Three of the four women’s semifinal spots have been filled at the U.S. Open.  The bottom section of the draw will see second-ranked Jelena Jankovic take on Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva.  Dinara Safina, Marat Safin’s younger sister and the most consistent player on tour since early spring, has also advanced. Jankovic, Dementieva and Safina [...]

Sport shooting added to Gay Games events

There will be no rugby or flag football at the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, but you can win a medal in sport shooting.
Air Rifle (10 meter) and Air Pistol (10 meter), both sport shooting disciplines offered in the Olympic Games, will be fired at the Cologne Gay Games in 2010. Air Rifle and [...]

Dumbest. Sports. Fan. EVER.

That would be me.
When I got notification last year that I won tickets to the Saturday and Sunday sessions of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, I was ecstatic. Finally, I’d get within 10 feet of Padraig Harrington! So, there I was, last Saturday morning, waiting in the stands at the first hole for [...]

First in history — gay polo tournament

While the same-sex wedding frenzy dominates headlines from California, it’s important to note that Saturday, June 14, 2008 was a red-letter day in same-sex sports history. The Gay Polo League played in its first real tournament.
I lucked into attending because GPL’S moving spirit, Chip McKenney, gave me a heads-up on the event. Chip, [...]

Anti-gay culture minister loses job in N. Ireland

Edwin Poots, who called gay sports “apartheid,” has been fired from his job as Northern Ireland’s minister for arts and culture. Poots lost his job in a cabinet reshuffle and it apparently had nothing to do with his anti-gay remarks, according to news reports, but rather with his support for a controversial stadium proposal.
Earlier this [...]

Buy me some peanuts and pinot noir

When hitting the Ted to watch the Atlanta Braves, I can unequivocally state that I’ve never wished for a glass of wine to sip while watching the home team pummel their opponents.
Beer? Yes. Wine? Not quite.
Then it’s a good thing that I’m not the brains behind a new charity venture that pairs Tom Glavine, Chipper [...]

All-rugby KOTH final

We will have a new King of the Hardwood champ and it will either be New Zealand rugby player Dan Carter (left) or his English counterpart Ben Cohen. Voting has begun for the final so make your selection here.
A huge tip of the hat to KOTH creator Layne (aka Mariner Duck Guy from our Discussion [...]

Who cares if you can pronounce his name

My favorite sport, by just a little, is football. I grew up on it. Baseball was in the background and Colorado, where i originally hail from, didn’t even have a team until my freshman year. So it gives me great pleasure when I can write something in my baseball blog that has [...]
