God.   This man is drop dead gorgeous.  In fact… I’ve actually written poetry about him.   So now I present to you a sonnet, Ode to a Bobsledding Bear:

Steven Holcomb, our American bobsledding bear.
He leads the USA’s team with strength and grace.
He and his men make the other bobsledders despair!
And now, in Vancouver, the bear wants first place!

His stocky body and full face belie,
The fierce warrior that burns inside.
The steel, resolve, and command in his eye.
And he conquers, with a graceful slide.

The bobsledders he leads have strength and power:
Tomasevitz, Olson, and Mesler, their names.
They all want to be the men of the hour.
But Holcomb is the bear I praise in these games.

Steven, make your statement to the world. This bear is great!
Bring us home the first American bobsled gold since 1948!

This year, the Philadelphia Daily News switched to defense, naming Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Stewart Bradley as one of its 2009 Sexy Singles. The annual feature selects single men and women, chosen from hundreds of entries, as the hottest bachelors and bachelorettes in the region.

Bradley, who was an intern at Elle magazine during the off-season, told the paper about his dating pet peeve (“I can’t stand snotty girls”) and what he tries to find out on a date (“How does she treat people who aren’t going to advance socially in any way? ]]> Dhani Jones is often referred to in the media as a Renaissance man, in part because of his love of bow ties, which he turned into a business venture. The biggest impression he made on the field as an Eagles linebacker from 2004-2006 was with his “air guitar” celebration every time he made a play. Unfortunately, those plays weren’t significant or frequent enough. A classic radio bit by local comedian Joe Conklin featured Andy Reid as a mall Santa at Christmas handing out gifts. My favorite: “Here’s a Dhani Jones air guitar — it plays everything but defense.”

So perhaps it’s a good idea for Jones, currently with the Cincinnati Bengals, to branch out into other sports. The Travel Channel debuts a new series on March 16, Dhani Tackles the Globe, in which he visits a number of countries and tries his hand at popular local sports. The website lists a number of activities, including rugby in England and a Surf Lifeguard Competition in Australia. Here’s a preview of the Muay Thai boxing episode from Thailand, featuring a shirtless Jones,  along with some eye candy of the still-photo variety.

]]> Sad news for those of you in love/lust with injured New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady — unless you’re supermodel Gisele Bundchen, that is. TMZ reports that Brady proposed on Christmas Eve, and Gisele accepted. According to TMZ’s sources, he proposed in front of her parents as they were flying to Boston from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on a private plane. Champagne and four dozen white roses were on board.

I’m sure I speak for everyone in wishing the happy couple a long and prosperous marriage. Gisele already has Tom…well, let’s just say he’s well-trained. He’s willing (as the video TMZ posted here shows) to carry her boxes, with a bum knee and ice on the sidewalks. He’s also good at picking up her mail. And all the while he’s harassed by paparazzi calling him “errand boy.” Gisele would be a fool to let him get away now.

]]> This week the Philadelphia Daily News unveiled its 6th annual Sexy Singles. From over 500 entries submitted by family members, friends or the prospective singles themselves, 30 men and women were named by the paper as the sexiest singles in the Philadelphia area.

The group includes three personal trainers and a fitness gym manager (who’s gay, by the way; his profile states the type of man he’s looking for). There are no less than six employees of local TV and radio stations, undoubtedly providing lots of free promotion for the paper on their stations. (Or does it really mean that a full 20 percent of beautiful single people work for TV and radio? We need a demographics study, stat!) Also named a Sexy Single is Philadelphia Eagles left guard Todd Herremans (pictured). No word on whether Herremans submitted his own name or if someone else entered for him.

What is Herremans is looking for in a mate? ”A relaxed good time…I don’t like women who always need to cuddle on you 24 hours a day. I need girls that have their own life going on. Easygoing.”

On a “favorite single” poll at Philly.com Herremans is currently in 7th place among the men. The gay guy is in last place with just 9 votes. Ouch.

]]> vobora_drafted.jpgThis is probably the last time you’ll see the name David Vobora, but he was the 2008 NFL Draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” the nickname given to the last person taken in the draft. The linebacker from the University of Idaho was the 252nd player selected, taken by the St. Louis Rams.

The Dallas Morning News had named Vobora a “sleeper pick” at linebacker in the draft. Apparently, they meant that every team would sleep on him for 251 picks.

He’s 6-foot-1, 214 pounds, and as you can see from his Idaho profile page (as compared with the pic here), he’s put on a couple pounds since football ended. -Cyd Zeigler jr.
