The Governor took time away from electioneering to attend the Breeders Cup today, arriving at Santa Anita just before the running of the much-awaited Classic. So he was there to see Dettori ride British-owned Raven’s Pass to an upset victory. Good-looking Dettori is Europe’s top jockey, and makes himself famous on the other side of the pond for his flying dismounts in the winner’s circle, and for kissing everybody in sight, male and female. Europeans find it mildly amusing. It was Dettori’s second win of the Cup. So he was pretty happy, and America got its first live look at Dettori’s way of celebrating.
Looking hot in his green Godolphin silks, Dettori jumped off Raven’s Pass and kissed his way around the winner’s circle, bussing some family and acquaintances. Then he just kept going. He even kissed the lens of the ESPN news camera. You could feel a few puritanical American eyebrows going up. One of the ESPN commentators said drily, “I wonder if he’s going to kiss the Governor.”

“Probably not,” said one of the other commentators.

Yes, Raven’s Pass denied that Classic win to Curlin, last year’s winner, who faded to fourth — probably over-campaigned this year, and not totally comfortable with the synthetic track surface. It was a good day for the sport, with no broken legs. And a good meet for the Europeans, who won most of the races, because their horses are used to running on turf, so they adjust easily to the poly tracks. It was a lot for them kiss about.

We horse lovers who have worried about Big Brown continuing to race on that problematical hoof can now breathe easy. The other day, the colt was pulled from preparation for the Breeders Cup Classic and officially retired to stud. The reason: a flukey new injury during a work, when a hind hoof clipped the back of a front hoof– he has a very long stride. The injury is not serious, but it will take 2-3 months to heal, and the stallion deal with Three Chimneys Farms calls for BB to be delivered in December. So the decision to retire him was clear. Hopefully he has a long and good life, rolling in clover and doing what stallions love to do.

Meanwhile, this early scratch leaves the $5 million Breeders Cup Classic without the long-hyped duel between Big Brown and Curlin. The meet needed a shot in the arm. Like everything else, the racing game has been kicked hard by the market crisis, showing a decline in bets and purses. But Curlin may well face another threat on October 25. The Japanese-owned colt Casino Drive has come to town for the Classic, and he’s on a roll. He may not have Curlin’s experience, but he’s got a blazing turn of foot. — Patricia Nell Warren

After he won the Haskell on August 4th — barely –the horse disappeared from public view. He hadn’t shown the fire of his earlier races. The IEAH Stables were clearly worried. His loud-talking trainer Rick Dutrow was talking less. They wanted him, and his problem feet, to get a good rest while they figured out what to do next. Play safe and retire him? Risk his stud career by racing him further? If he broke down or got beat, somebody would be left holding the bag on his big expensive syndication deal. Race him again? If so, where?

Breeders Cup in October? Maybe…but they’d need a good prep race. Dirt? Grass? Poly? Big Brown likes grass. Who could forget his sizzling win on grass at Saratoga last year? And who would ride him? His trainer and Kent Desormeaux had their shouting match after the disastrous Belmont showing, but things got smoothed over.

There was hot interest in a match race with Curlin, but the IEAH shied away from having Brown meet Curlin right now. Finally Monmouth Park made the IEAH an offer they couldn’t refuse — a 1 1/8 mile stakes race on grass created especially for Big Brown and timed as a Breeders Cup prep for him. It came off today, and an international field of good older grass horses with speed showed up to take their poke at The Brown. The place was packed, and fans bought up an entire issue of Big Brown t-shirts. Trainer Dutrow and the IEAH insisted they didn’t have to win, just have a good prep. Yeah, right.

In the post parade, the horse looked way better than he had at the Haskell — relaxed, a few pounds heavier. The punters like the way he looked too — they sent him off at 3-5.

Instead of the usual strategy — letting Brown sit off the pace, then launching that cannonball kick — jockey Desormeaux did the classic frontrunner gambit. He had his horse smoking’ way out in front, hoping to burn off the speed. Then he eased off and let the pack take a run at him. But he kept just enough gas in Brown’s tank. With the late-charging Proudinsky coming at him, Big Brown dug in with that old fire, and held off the German horse by a neck.

Afterwards he had a good gallop-out — he looked comfortable and pleased with himself.

So it’s Breeder’s Cup, here we come. Will The Brown and Curlin finally meet there? Stay tuned. And all of us who like this horse (and Curlin too) will continue to hold our breath for him. – Patricia Nell Warren
