It will be her fourth attempt. She first tried what she calls the “Xtreme Dream” in 1978 at the age of 29, but she was thwarted by bad weather. Last summer she attempted the swim twice, but she was beaten back by an injury, asthma and jellyfish stings.

Now she says she understands the entire problem has been the jellyfish all along (she talks about it in a video after the jump), and she’s figuring out, with the help of various companies, how to protect herself from those.

While these swims are starting to feel a little bit like the boy who cried wolf, we have to praise Nyad for not letting go of her dream. Too often people accept rejection and setbacks on the first try. Nyad won’t be stopped, which is a testament to her character.

We’ll again follow her in this crusade and hope she finally completes her dream of 34 years.

You can follow Nyad’s quest on Twitter.

But I got a lot more interested this morning when I saw BYU lost last night!

For the last two weeks we’ve had endure columns praising BYU for “standing up for what they believe in” and suspending a player for simply having sex with his girlfriend. One columnist even called them “America’s Team.” It’s been a disgusting display of the same morality that keeps gay people from marrying (and made gay sex illegal for decades). So to see them get knocked out by a bunch of miscreants from Florida, 83-74, was glorious.

The collective gay community really missed the mark with the whole BYU issue. I spent a long time arguing with gay people who felt the suspended BYU player, Brandon Davies, deserved it because he chose to go to BYU and live by their honor code. When I asked how they would feel if BYU suspended a player for being gay, that was somehow a totally different issue for them and of COURSE they’d be against THAT! It’s just gross to see so many gay people say, “yeah, it’s totally OK for institutions of higher learning, that accept government funds and tax breaks, to tell students whom they can have sex with.”

It’s been a disappointing double-standard that gay people have used to justify their glee: A straight guy finally got busted for having sex. Tee hee hee. Luckily, Davies’ team won’t be on TV anymore this year.

Not as satisfying, but also great to see, was Arizona’s 93-77 second-half dismantling of Duke. What makes me the most frustrated about Duke is how the referees blatantly cheat on their behalf over and over and over again. They did it again last night – check out the two Arizona dunks in the video below where the Duke defender slams into the Arizona player…but, of course, no foul is called. What was even sweeter was that Duke seemed in control of the game the entire first half; Then Arizona’s athleticism simply took over. And there’s not a thing the referees could do about it, though they tried. Glorious.

The other great aspect of the game was to see a “lowly Pac-10 team” beat a “juggernaut ACC team.” Again, the Pac-10 got mostly ignored by the selection committee, and again the Pac-10 has done very well for itself in the tournament.

If the University of Florida is the fourth-best college football team in the country, then it will be an incredibly weak year in college football. Florida beat Miami of Ohio, 34-12, but that score is highly misleading. It was 20-12 in the fourth until the Gators scored on a 72-yard run and a lucky throw-it-up-in-the-end-zone-and-pray touchdown pass on fourth and 21. And this came against a Miami team that won one game in 2009.

How bad was the Florida offense, now that Tim Tebow is in the pros? With 12 minutes left in the game, the Gators had 28 total yards. The Orlando Sentinel sums up the ineptitude pretty well:

Eight fumbles, including five botched center snaps from the shotgun formation, only 41 passing yards and minus 16 rushing at the end of the third quarter. Although they finished with 212 yards, 187 of them came in the final 13 minutes.

The center snaps were a joke. Center Mike Pouncey snapped the ball seemingly everywhere but into the hands of new quarterback John Brantley. The result was 60 yards lost and a turnover. When a team can’t execute one of football’s most basic plays, you know they have their work cut out for them.

I thought the Florida result was the biggest news of Week 1, and it shows the Gators were ranked so high more because of their name than their talent.

Saturday wasn’t a banner day for SEC dominance — Mississippi blew a 21- point lead and lost to Jacksonville State, 49-48, in double OT. Later, LSU did beat North Carolina, 30-24, but had to hold off a furious rally from the depleted Tar Heels.

I would love to hear what other fans saw on opening weekend.

I wonder how many of those 1,500 were gay. Dressed in their Sunday best (on Saturday), drinking mimosas and eating cheese and crackers, it sounds like the perfect event for some local gays (and gentile polo fans as well).

So if you’re a fisherman and are interested in heading to Florida for some great fly fishing, look up Norm and tell him I sent you.

I’m not a big fan of blind items prined by newspapers and mags; Whenever anything is unattributed and untraceable, I get a little suspicious. But this tidbit ran in the New York Daily News last week:

Which baseball heart-throb may be playing for the other team? Word is he slips into bed with Florida fellas.

What’s particularly bad about this item is that it could be anyone. Three keys: 1) He plays baseball, 2) he’s probably moderately attractive and 3) there’s some relation to Florida. How many men playing baseball could be called attractive and at some point pass through Florida (be it spring training or partying)? All of them. I’ll wait for the next clue before embarking on a guessing game.
