The Harvard wrestling team showed their endorsement of National Coming Out Day on Tuesday, gathering with rainbow pins and fun T-shirts to support gay athletes and students. One of the T-shirts worn by a wrestler summed it up perfectly: “Some dudes marry dudes. Get over it.” From the Harvard Crimson:

Before their Tuesday afternoon practice, members of the Harvard varsity wrestling team posed for a picture on the steps in front of the Malkin Athletic Center. But instead of sporting their team uniforms in this photo, the athletes came in gay pride attire and rainbow pins that read “Proud Ally.” …

According to wrestler David J. Lalo ’13, it was a non-resident tutor in Lowell House, Robert Joseph “R.J.” Jenkins, who inspired the team to participate in National Coming Out Day.

“[R.J.] has made a tremendous impact across our team,” Lalo said. “We wanted to show him we support the LGBT community.”

Read the full story and see more photos at the Harvard Crimson. For some reason they use the acronym BGLTQ for our community. Hadn’t seen that one before.

Waaaaah. Waaaaaaaaaaaah. All the way from Bristol, Conn., the rest of the country can hear Dick Vitale and countless other commentators whining because so-and-so didn’t get into the men’s basketball tournament…despite the NCAA adding three more spots this year! You can see Vitale’s annual whining fit after the jump.

Andy Glockner has six teams he says got “snubbed.” And many are whining that Harvard – HARVARD!! – got “snubbed.” Harvard lost to Yale and needed double overtime to beat Penn; And when they had a playoff game against Princeton for a right to go to the tournament…they lost. But somehow they’ve been “snubbed” and we’re all supposed to cry for poor Harvard. And Colorado, they had 13 losses – but somehow they “deserved” to go with a loss to San Francisco and losers of 9 of their last 16 games.

I understand empathize with the undefeated college football teams who don’t get a shot at the national championship. But if you can’t convince a group of people that you should be included in a field of 68 teams, please go quietly and enjoy the NIT. My guess is if they increased the field to 200 teams, Vitale and the others would be screaming because 16-loss teams like North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook “deserved” to be there.

(Edited to correct error on Harvard-Princeton game.)

Since then, he’s been hard to pin down on various levels: His sexuality is fluid and he says he’s not gay; He has moved around a few times; And his career focus has seemed to shift from NFL player to writer and now to basketball player again. Puchtel is now in Israel playing professional basketball, where his name is listed as Zach Fuchtal.

Zach is a fantastically interesting guy. I’ve gotten to chat with him on the phone and correspond via email a bit. He makes no apology about being hard to categorize: He relishes in it. Take this blog post, for example:

For years, I wanted to be a rockstar, but not sincerely. It was more of a “geez, that’d be awesome to do lots of drugs, have sex with tons of women/men, travel the world, drive cars into pools, and never answer to anyone” type of dream. For a lot of people, this is “living the dream”.

How many pro basketball players would say that? “Have sex with tons of women/men?” Very few.

His latest few blog posts talk about a coming change in his life. I’ll be interested to see what the next change holds for him.

Hat tip to Gay.com.
