This video says it far better than I could – I’ve never seen people lined up in the streets of Manhattan watching the Oscars breaking out into stunned celebration…

USA scores in 91st minute and wins!

The perfect way to watch soccer. I woke up in the 80th minute of the USA-Algeria World Cup game. Game tied, 0-0. No hope, game over. Until the 91st minute when Landon Donovan (right) leads a coast-to-coast break, gets a rebound off a missed shot and scores. U.S. wins, 1-0. The U.S. saves itself from 90 scoreless minutes with one fast break. And they needed it, as England was beating Slovenia. They went from out of the World Cup to winning Group C in a flash. The last time the U.S. won their group: 1930.

I will say this for soccer: The NFL could learn something about allowing big post-score celebrations from the “other” football. There’s nothing wrong with piling up on the sideline after a big score, and I’m glad these teams are allowed to do it.

Landon Donovan has swine flu

After losing 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match in Mexico, American soccer star Landon Donovan has confirmed he contracted swine flu (now known as H1N1) while there. Now this piece of brilliance from Donovan, about whether he’ll play in the L.A. Galaxy’s next game: “If I feel well there’s no reason why I can’t play.” Um, how about not giving the flu to anyone else? Is that a reason? He even said, “The [doctors] don’t know a ton.” Yet he’s going to run out there as soon as he feels better. Hopefully he does feel better soon…and stays away from everyone else until he doesn’t have it anymore.

Anyone else want to go to Mexico?

Cyd and Landon: Separated at birth?

On Monday, while watching the USA vs. Italy game, I saw a closeup of Landon Donovan, a member of the USA team since 2000. Upon closer inspection of Donovan’s facial features, something in my mind clicked. He resembled Cyd. I had to check to make sure, so, with my laptop near me, I looked up a picture of Cyd. In my opinion, the resemblance between both men is uncanny. Do you agree?
