Roddy White was the perfect No. 1 fantasy pick

All through July and August, fantasy football players struggle with the planning of their NFL fantasy draft. They review the experts’ picks, look at matchups, check the injuries on the offensive line, and at some point in the late summer sit down and spend a couple hours selecting their team. With all of that, most drafts look the same. The same players get picked in the first round, the second round, the same defense gets picked first. And with all that, it’s safe to say nobody got it right this year, because with the fantasy regular season over, here’s what the perfect 2010 fantasy football draft looked like (with average ESPN draft position in parentheses).

Round 1 – WR Roddy White, Atlanta (23)
“Interesting, interesting,” is what your draft buddies would say. Everybody in your draft had a shot at Roddy White in the first round. If you had the No. 1 pick in the whole draft, you made a mistake if you didn’t take Roddy White. He would have ended up as your No. 3 receiver, but he was the best value here. By the way, White was my No. 1 draft pick in my fantasy draft (with Jim) this year.

Round 2 – TE Antonio Gates, San Diego (44)
“What? A tight end in the second round? You haven’t picked a running back yet. See you in the toilet bowl!” I can hear the cackles from your fellow draft buddies now. They have a sucker on the line, and they can’t wait to kick your ass all season long.

Round 3 – RB Arian Foster, Houston (47)
“Okay, good pick-up.” Foster was high on a lot of lists. Maurice Jones-Drew said in August the one big break-out fantasy player this year would be Foster. So your buddies would be kicking themselves for not taking him earlier.

Round 4 – WR Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City (62)
“Bwahahaha! He drops more than he catches!” And that crappy QB throwing to him. It’s back on the razz train.

Round 5 – WR Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh (75)
At this point everyone is just focused on their own draft and has stopped paying attention to what you’re doing. Wallace won’t even start for you most weeks, but he’ll be trade fodder if you want to use him there.

Round 6 – WR Terrell Owens, Cincinnati (78)
“Dude, what are you doing? That’s your fourth wide receiver and you don’t even have another running back yet.” The rest of the guys would get a chuckle, but they’ve essentially written you off for the season at this point.

Round 7 – RB Darren McFadden, Oakland (107)
“He shouldn’t have even been drafted this high in the REAL NFL Draft.” Most “experts” think McFadden will share too much time with Michael Bush, and many think Bush will be the starter by mid-season at the latest.

Round 8 – DT Pittsburgh Steelers (113)
“A defense? Dude, you haven’t picked a QB yet. Are you trying to lose?” Ha ha ha ha ha.

Round 9 – K David Akers, Philadelphia (139)
And then the party starts. They have to stop the draft as your buddies spend ten minutes laughing. Some of them are on their phones calling and texting their other friends to tell them what an idiot you are for taking a kicker in the ninth round. The league commissioner asks you to pay your entry fee on the spot because he doesn’t think you’re good for it. Oh, they’re loving this.

Round 10 – QB Kyle Orton, Denver (153)
You skip over Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez for Orton. More laughter.

Round 11 – QB Michael Vick, Philadelphia (200)
The coup de grâce. That which ends any possible hope you had of winning a single game this season. You pick a quarterback who isn’t even his team’s starter. “You think he’s gonna play some wide receiver?” Your buddies joke. Your season is lost.

Round 12 – RB Peyton Hillis, Cleveland (NR)
Another guy who isn’t even the starter on his team. “Your draft will go down in history as the worst ever. I can’t wait to email Matthew Berry this one. He’ll frame the email!”

Round 13 – WR Brandon Lloyd, Denver (NR)
Guys want to laugh at every pick now, but this one isn’t that funny. Except that you have the Denver QB and starting WR. And Lloyd isn’t even their No. 1 guy.

Round 14 – TE Marcedes Lewis, Jacksonville (NR)
“What, you gonna draft a backup kicker next?” Hmmmm…Dan Carpenter’s on your list, but you’ll stick with just Akers for a couple weeks….

Round 15 – RB Mike Tolbert, San Diego (NR)
The guy who make a “great pick” by drafting Ryan Matthews in the second round already scooped up Darren Sproles as insurance. So you’re left with lumbering Mike Tolbert. Curses.

Round 16 – WR Steve Johnson, Buffalo (NR)
With your final pick of the draft you select a guy buried on the depth chart. He’ll finish 12th overall for wide receivers in fantasy points scored, but he’ll never see your starting lineup. Eventually you’ll have to drop him to snap up a kicker for a week. Or you’ll trade him. But for now, he’s one of the many laughing stocks of your “disastrous” draft.

So that’s it: It’s all you had to do to get these results:

QB rankings: 1, 7
RB rankings: 1, 2, 4, 16
WR rankings: 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 12
TE rankings: 1, 4
K rankings: 1
DT rankings: 1

Chances are you wouldn’t have lost a single game all season. In fact, chances are you wouldn’t have won by less than double digits all season. Sure, the week Vick got knocked out of the game you would be hurting if you’d started him over Orton (who had 340 yards and 2 TDs that week). But I guarantee this: You’d be the only one laughing now.

He wants that changed.

“I would love to get another dog in the future,” he told theGrio. “I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals.”

Too bad. I think Vick has forfeited forever his right to own a pet. Especially when he gave this answer to the question of whether anyone told him that dog fighting was wrong:

“There was nothing that ever told me it wasn’t right,” Vick said. “No one ever told me it was the wrong thing to do.”

Anyone with a shred of humanity could have told him it was wrong to torture and kill animals and he should have known it was wrong; he knew it was wrong, which is why he went to great lengths to keep his operation hidden. I would never allow Vick to have a dog. He can always demonstrate his newfound love of animals by volunteering at an animal shelter, where he can show as much love as he wants for pets under supervision.

I am curious as to what others think — should there be a statute of limitations on Vick owning a dog? What about any other pet?

Today, no one is talking about dog fighting. They’re not talking about jail sentences. No, today they’re talking about the MVP-like performance that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick put on last night on Monday Night Football. His stats were record-breaking: 333 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, 4 TD passes, 2 TD runs. In our standard-scoring fantasy league, he got me 55 points; I can’t remember seeing anyone that close to 60 since Shaun Alexander went crazy about five years ago. Vick’s was certainly the single-most dominant performance by one player in the league this year.

My partner (who made a rare appearance in front of the TV on Monday night) asked me last night, “So does everyone just forget about what he did with the dogs?” The easy answer is: No. Few people were as aggressive in their attacks of him as I was. But at some point, everyone deserves the opportunity to prove themselves and move on. By all accounts, Vick has been a fantastic teammate. And as a player on the field, he has certainly rehabilitated his image. You don’t forget, you just move on.

What is making Michael Vick the most dangerous man in football is his sudden ability to make amazing plays on the run and in the pocket. When defenses have attacked Vick in the past, they focused on keeping him in the pocket where he felt less comfortable. Now that he’s making plays from there, defenses can’t just keep him in the pocket and drop linebackers into deep zones.

Right now, all the talk of dogs and jail time is a distant memory. Vick hasn’t just become part of the NFL MVP talk, he’s grab hold of it and run away with it. Think about these numbers. His QB rating is 115.1. He has thrown 11 TDs to zero interceptions. And he’s run for 341 yards and 4 TDs. And that’s starting just six games! His completion percentage is over 60 for the first season in his career.

Next weekend the Eagles get a visit from the New York Giants. The Giants have the No. 4 passing defense and the No. 3 rushing defense. We’ll get a taste of just how good Vick is right now next Sunday night. I can’t wait.

Gay, like about 1,100 other words, had been banned by the NFL because the words were in bad taste.

Now the NFL is allowing people to order Philadelphia Eagles No. 7 Vick jerseys for their dog. You can’t order “Bitch.” You can’t order “Dogkiller” or “Dogfighter.” They’re clearly aware of the issue, because they have banned the word “Pitbull,” but they allow the words “Poodle,” “Chihuahua,” “Retriever,” “Dalmatian” and every other dog name I can think of. Yet they sanction people putting the jersey of a dog murderer on their dogs.

This seems like a real mistake by the NFL. They ban other attempts to make a mockery of the league and their jerseys, and anyone buying a Michael Vick jersey for the dog is just that.

Should the NFL allow people to make Vick jerseys for their dog? It would be easy for them to ban Vick’s name from dog jerseys if they wanted to. They clearly take positions on similar speech. Should they stop printing Vick dog jerseys?

If you remember earlier this year after Brian Dawkins was let go . . .

So, a guy with a physical impairment who was lucky enough to work on game days at the stadium for his favorite team, makes a stupid comment on Facebook and is coldly and swiftly fired. His comment wasn’t against the law. It just made the thin-skinned Eagles mad. In their eyes, he doesn’t deserve a second chance but someone who spent two years in jail for his involvement in the mistreatment — and flat-out murder — of dogs does deserve a second chance.

During the press conference, one reporter actually tried to ask about the treatment of Leone compared to the acceptance of Vick, and was brusquely shut down by Reid. “This press conference is about Michael Vick,” he blustered.

Between the Vikings and the Eagles, is there any way two teams could go 0-16?

The news that the Philadelphia Eagles signed Michael Vick to a contract shocked just about everyone in the Philadelphia region — not to mention those who have moved on but still have ties to the area. Case in point: Pink. The singer-songwriter was born in nearby Doylestown. She is also a vegetarian and major supporter of PETA. Thus, her tweeted reaction to the Vick news isn’t too surprising:

wow. michael vick in MY hometown, Philly. of all the places. I hope the fans tear him to pieces like his beloved dogs.

That remains to be seen. Reaction is mixed at best. Even those who feel Vick deserves a second chance are mostly ambivalent about it, and probably would have preferred he sign elsewhere. Will that change if he starts tearing up the league once he finally takes the field?

The question now for the NFL is, does the ex-convict “deserve” a second chance?

I have a problem with the word “deserve.” Despite how grossly heinous I consider what he did to those dogs, I don’t have a big problem if he gets a second shot at the NFL. But I also don’t have a big problem if he doesn’t.

Does he “deserve” a second chance? Is it his god-given right? I don’t think so. And when I look at the picture of this dog and think about what he did to those animals, I will be hoping he doesn’t get one. But if NFL commish Roger Goodell gives him a second chance, I’ll respect that and just cheer against him every time he steps on the field.
