The proposed location is around the corner from a school and residents are using that excuse to fight it. From the New York Post:

“It’s disgusting,” fumed Iyanth Davis, 53, a law librarian. “That’s absolutely too close to these two schools . . . And the issue is not that it’s a gay bar — it’s a bar . . . That’s the issue.”

Disgusting? It’s highly doubtful that word would be used if it were a straight bar. According to the Post, the bar owners want to subdivide the building so the bar complies with city law and will sit just over 200 feet away from the school. Again, if it weren’t a gay bar with all of those evil gay pedophiles running around, it wouldn’t be an issue for many.

School gets out in the early afternoon. Bars open in the late afternoon and on the weekends. And even if they were open at the same time, a) the bar wouldn’t allow 12-year-olds into the bar and b) patrons wouldn’t be outside trying to lure kids away with bottles of Coors Lite.

I enjoy Boxers every time I go, and I hope the city doesn’t stop them from opening up where they want to open. In an overcrowded city where you’re always 200 feet from a teenager, you can’t legislate everything. Heck, the first Boxers is next door to an old church (that now houses a bar)…and Manhattan hasn’t sunk into the ocean yet!

Renee and The Devotion Project: More Than Ever (screening together)
Saturday, July 23, 5:00 PM at Cinema Village
Monday, July 25, 5:30 PM at Cinema Village

Renee Richards ranks among the most controversial professional tennis players of all time, up there with John McEnroe. Richards’ controversy does not, however, stem from her on-court demeanor. Instead, Richards was being asked to take a test to prove that she was genetically a woman, instigating a women-born-women policy for the US Open. Richards was born Richard Raskind, a womanizing opthamologist specializing in correcting eye misalignment. The film follows Richards closely through her daily life and features interviews with Billie Jean King and McEnroe.

The Devotion Project: More Than Ever is the first in a series of short films celebrating the love and devotion shared by same-sex couples.

The Film Guide is available on-line and tickets can be purchased at NewFest’s Web site.

This year, the festival will open and close at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and will be headquartered throughout the week at Chelsea’s SVA Theater and Cinema Village. Special satellite screenings will be held at The Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side, and Harlem Stage.

You can also purchase tickets in person from now until July 20th from 2pm – 6pmat the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

The Pride Bowl is the annual gay flag football tournament in Chicago held the two days before the city’s pride celebration. In the third-place game, the New York Warriors avenged their loss in the championship game of last year’s Gay Bowl, beating a combined Los Angeles-South Florida-Michigan-Denver team, 25-20, in a laugh-filled game. The Chicago Spin Flames took home their first trophy since winning Gay Bowl V, beating the Denver Mountain Tops in the consolation final, 33-20.

Special congratulations go out to the Jacksonville Surge, who won their first tournament game ever this weekend. In fact, they also got their second tournament win!

While gay flag football has long been dominated on the national scene by the uber-intense Gay Bowl, it’s great to see other tournaments like this in Chicago, Palm Springs and Ft. Lauderdale pop up. I already can’t wait for next year!

The coolest thing about talking to him for an hour this afternoon was how excited he was about his “new life.” His enthusiasm was apparent and contagious: He simply couldn’t contain himself.

“I need to be taken seriously in the sports world,” he told me. When he woke up this morning, he thought coming out would put that in jeopardy. Just hours later, after hearing from people across sports, he had a different perspective.

I think so. I’m a man of character. I walk the walk. The only place I haven’t been the real deal is when someone asks me about girls. I couldn’t stand those moments. I detest being a phony.

Jared probably couldn’t have picked a better spot to come out in sports radio, as we’ve reported on ESPN’s gay-friendly policies and attitude before.

Front Runners New York, initially inspired by Patricia Nell Warren’s best-selling novel The Front Runner, is teaming up with the It Gets Better Project for its 30th annual Pride Run next month. Check out the press release for more details:

NEW YORK, NY (May 11, 2011) – Front Runners New York (FRNY) is proud to announce the It Gets Better ProjectTM (IGBP) as the beneficiary of the club’s 30th annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Run. Proceeds from the five-mile race, which is a New York Road Runners (NYRR) marathon-qualifying event, will go to IGBP. The race, which offers something for casual runners to elite racers, will take place in Central Park at 9 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Registration and race details are viewable online.

Every year since 1982, FRNY has organized this five-mile race with NYRR to bring its mission of better health, fitness and well being for the LGBT and LGBT-supportive population and to celebrate Gay Pride weekend in New York City. IGBP is the perfect organization for FRNY – the nation’s biggest LGBT running club – to partner with in this special anniversary year.

“The coming out process can still be very difficult for today’s youth as we’ve seen too clearly from events over the past year,” notes FRNY president Megan Jenkins. “Many of our club members ran the Pride Run as their first step out of the closet, so it seems wonderfully fitting for us to name the It Gets Better ProjectTM as the beneficiary of our race this year. This campaign continues to bring the message of hope and acceptance to those struggling with identity issues.”
Jenkins was also one of the FRNY members who shared her own coming out story this past fall when the running club lent its voice to the rising chorus of the amazing It Gets Better ProjectTM grassroots campaign. The video can be accessed here.

Indeed, the missions of the two organizations are very much aligned. Over the last three decades, FRNY has – in a very real way – helped LGBT people discover that life does “get better.” At the end of 2010, the club had almost 700 members, making it one of the most active and visible running clubs in New York City. FRNY supports a beginner training clinic so that the sport of running can be more accessible to newcomers, offers free coaching to all its members, helps train people of all levels for of all types of athletic events, creates a welcoming social environment where all club activities are open to everyone regardless of financial circumstance and gives back to the LGBT community. While LGBT people may not have traditionally found a home in athletics, thousands have found a loving community, a family and a home through Front Runners New York.

“Front Runners New York represents the best of the LGBT community and has served as a support system for thousands of newly out LGBT adults for more than 30 years,” says It Gets BetterTM co-founder Dan Savage. “We are honored that FRNY has chosen the It Gets Better Project to receive the proceeds from their 30th annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Run.” For more information about the It Gets Better Project, please visit http://www.itgetsbetter.org/frontrunnersny.

Front Runners New York and the It Gets Better Project hope to see you out in Central Park on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Please spread the word today and become a fan of the race on facebook. For updates on the race and on FRNY events, please visit www.frny.org. Volunteers and those with questions about the race can email Megan Jenkins at president@frny.org.
