NBA Playoffs heat up players and refs

I’ve had trouble getting into the NBA regular season for the last 10 years. But inevitably, around early May, I get hooked on the playoffs. I start planning my evenings around them. The players seem to suddenly come to life. Whereas they slog through March, in May they turn on a switch. Defenses come alive, guys play through injury. You can see the finality of the seven-game series in the games. And the referees throw things at the fans (video after the jump)!

Being a Celtics fanatic growing up, it certainly was cool watching this “old,” “outclassed” team in green take the franchise’s first-ever 2-0 series lead on the road. And the possibility of another Celtics-Lakers final is too tantalizing to resist. While I know the rest of the country would have to turn off SportsCenter for the three weeks of the NBA Finals, here’s hoping.

Magic have best shooting-percentage game in NBA Final history and beat the Lakers, bringing out the tired “It’s a series” cliche everywhere.
Penguins force Game 7 of Stanley Cup Finals. So far, the home team is 6-0 in the series. Game 7 is at Detroit.
The tea leaves this morning point to Brett Favre not playing for the Vikings this season.
Tom Brady flipped a kayak on the Charles River … and was retrieved from the water safely. Colts fans everywhere let out a disappointing sigh.

The Orlando Magic have taken a 3-1 series lead over the heavily favored Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs aren’t out of it yet, with two home games remaining. But they’ve lost 6 of their last 8 games against the Magic.
Pittsburgh Penguins sweep Carolina Hurricanezzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin will fire agent Drew Rosenhaus (right).
ManU faces Barcelona in the Champions League final. That’s soccer.

Both the Magic and the Rockets force Game 7s against the defending conference champs.
Phelps finishes 2nd in his first race back, proof that marijuana does impede motor skills.
University of North Dakota and NCAA cave to the demands of a minority of Native Americans and will change their mascot. Please oh PLEASE will some school make their mascot “the Fighting Queers.” In fact, I have their mascot right here (above).
Chad Johnson and this Ochocinco nonsense has to be the most annoying NFL story of the last 12 months. Yes, beating even T.O. and Brett Favre.
Another Aussie sex scandal, this time involving a soccer player and a 13-year-old girl. The soccer player has plead not guilty.

Last year’s NBA Finalists both lose homecourt advantage Monday night. Magic top Celtics, Rockets top Kobe Lakers.
So much for the SI jinx: Kansas City Royal Zach Greinke (he was on the cover) improves to 6-0 with another shutout. Could his season be legendary?
Indiana to allow girls to try out for boys’ baseball. I wonder what they’d do if a boy wanted to play girls’ softball.
