Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho doesn’t like somebody. On a snowy Monday this week, a camera caught him saying (video after the jump):

Y esos maricones…no dicen con que balon se juega?

Which translates to: “And those faggots…they don’t say with what ball to play?” He then asks for an orange ball and walks away…with what looks like a basketball

I guess not everyone knows about Football v. Homophobia week.

Moment #27: María José Martínez-Patiño kicked off Spanish track team, titles stripped

Track & Field, 1986. For Spanish hurdler María José Martínez-Patiño , the journey to prove her womanhood in the world of sports was costly. In 1983 she competed in the World Track & Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland; It was there she “passed” her first gender test and received a Certificate of Femininity. Two years later at the World University Games in Kobe, Japan, she forgot her certificate and had to take a gender test again. This time, she failed the test and was not allowed to compete.

Everyone kept the situation quiet, and in January 1986 she was told to feign injury and opt out of the Spanish national championship. She refused and won the 60m hurdles. Almost immediately her story was leaked, she was thrown off the national team, and her national records were erased from the record books. From her personal account of the weeks that followed:

I was expelled from our athletes’ residence, my sports scholarship was revoked, and my running times were erased from my country’s athletics records. I felt ashamed and embarrassed. I lost friends, my fiancé, hope, and energy. But I knew that I was a woman, and that my genetic difference gave me no unfair physical advantage. I could hardly pretend to be a man; I have breasts and a vagina. I never cheated. I fought my disqualification.

Two years later, the International Association of Athletics Federation, the world’s track & field governing body, gave Martínez-Patiño the green light to compete again. By then it was too late: Her time away from the sport, and the mental toll of her fight to compete, had killed her chances. She missed the 1992 Barcelona Olympics by one-tenth of a second.

Her plight brought some much-needed attention to the issue of gender testing, which helped lead to the end of mandatory tests a decade later. It was one of the last high-profile bannings based on the gender test in track & field until Caster Semenya 20 years later (per Zwischengeschlecht.org).

Weekend hot jock: Golfer Alvaro Quiros

If you’re tuned into the PGA Championship this weekend, you’ll have to pay close attention to Spaniard Alvaro Quiros. He hasn’t been in enough events to be ranked, but if he had been he’d be the No. 1 player in regards to driving distance this season. The rest of his game sucks, but it’s been good enough this week to 1-over for the PGA Championship so far, tied for 26th; It’s the first Major cut he’s made. He’s 26 years old, stands 6-foot-3, and has five professional wins in his five years as a pro.

Weekend Hot Jock: Bojan Krkic

Meet 18-year-old Bojan Krkic, a Spanish soccer player who signed his first professional contract with FC Barcelona at the age of 17. In his three-season club career he’s scored 29 goals in 97 games; Not bad for 18. Some interesting tidbits have dotted his young career. Last February he should have become the youngest player ever to represent Spain, but he called in sick. In May it was revealed that he had requested to not play in Euro 2008 citing personal reasons and fatigue.

He’s got an “official” Myspace page, so you too can be his friend.

Spanish soccer team naked for pay

Earlier this week we brought you the story of Galáctico Pegaso, a Spanish soccer team whose players dropped their shorts on the field to protest their salaries or lack there-of. Their latest stunt is a picture of the team nude in the locker room holding up the digits of a bank account in front of their packages. The bank account belongs to all of the players jointly, and they’re asking for donations to their cause – namely, their salaries.

My suggestion: Send a donation on the condition they drop the numbers!

Spanish soccer players drop sus pantalones

“Con el culo al aire.” In Spanish it means “with the butt to the air.” Some members of the Galáctico Pegaso soccer team in Spain quite nearly took it literally last week as they dropped their shorts on the field, apparently in protest of not getting paid. I say they nearly took it literally because they kept their underwear on. From what I can tell: 7 prefer classic briefs, 2 boxer-briefs and 2 square-cut briefs. Most popular color: Black, but I want to see more of the one wearing maroon. A full pic and video after the jump.

Weekend Hot Jock: Feliciano Lopez

Move over Marat Safin. Take a seat, Andy Roddick. Make way for tennis’ new hottest Tour player: Feliciano Lopez. Great hair, beautiful face, nice physique. The 27-year-old Spaniard has only one Tour singles title, and he has one doubles title with Fernando Verdasco. Interestingly, this past Australian Open he had played Gilles Muller in the then-longest Aussie Open match in history, until his compatriots Verdasco and Rafael Nadal’s record semifinal match. He’s also played doubles with Nadal, and when they are on the court together in the same uniform, it’s very tough to tell them apart (see video after the jump). He’s presently ranked No. 28 in the world.

He’s also grabbed the attention of some with see-through Capri pants he has worn at tournaments. He most definitely prefers a jockstrap to boxers or briefs when he plays. And yes, like so many other top European athletes these days, he’s been photographed naked.
