The PTI guys talked about it Friday, and the annoying Tony Kornheiser added this little gem:

I’ll also say she’s tougher than Adam Lambert, and she wears less eyeliner.

Kornheiser tries to crack a joke about every 30 seconds, and most of the time it’s of the roll-your-eyes type. Some are upset because they see it as Kornheiser saying gays are weaker than girls. He’s got a cover, because Elizabeth and Adam share the last name and it’s the kind of stupid humor he’s known for. But if her last name was Willis, would he really say, “She’s tougher than Bruce?” Maybe, but I doubt it. Nothing to march on Bristol over, but another example of how annoying Kornheiser is.

Kornheiser said he was leaving because he’s afraid of planes and he would have had to fly this season because of the schedule. Right. While there are a couple coast-to-coast trips for MNF this year, last year featured a Washington-Arizona-Buffalo three-week stretch, which was after a San Diego-Pittsburgh trip. The year before that, he went from Pittsburgh to Seattle. Sounds like a good excuse to get out (if he wasn’t actually ‘let go’). Now if only Ron Jaworski could develop a fear of planes too, we’d be all set.

So, I found myself doing a double take when I heard ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser say this about Garcia, the Tampa starter, during Monday’s Panthers-Buccaneer’s game:

“Jeff Garcia, who loves to date hot quarterbacks. Tried to get Brett Favre.”

I laughed when I heard this, knowing that Kornheiser made a mistake. He meant Jon Gruden, not Jeff Garcia. Gruden, the Tampa coach, is known for falling in and out of love (in a football sense) with quarterbacks, and he was flirting with Favre in the offseason. Kornheiser was apparently riffing on something Garcia said about Gruden earlier this year: “He loves quarterbacks. But he likes to just date. He doesn’t like to marry.”

Still, the juxtaposition of the Garcia rumors with the Kornheiser comments was a Freudian slip at its best.

Here is the audio, courtesy of Pro Football Talk:

Favre’s replacement, Aaron Rodgers, was terrific, going 18 for 22 with one touchdown pass and one touchdown run. People who wrote off the Packers when Favre retired seemed to forget that this team is loaded with young talent and 2007′s 13-3 record was no fluke. The Pack will be a contender in the NFC.

On the bad side, the game unfortunately was on ESPN, which means we had to listen to commentator Tony Kornheiser for three hours. He is simply the worst NFL announcer I have ever heard. Practically every sentence had the words “Brett” and “Favre” in it, and it got so bad that analyst Ron Jaworski told him in a polite way to STFU about it. Kornheiser’s shtick is to establish a story line in the pregame and talk ad nauseum about it, regardless of what is happening in the game.

For example, the Packers faced a 1st-and-33 and Kornheiser said that every fan watching was wondering what Favre would do. Uh, no we weren’t — 1st and 33 is an extremely rare situation and no quarterback would be expected to deliver in that situation.

I like Kornheiser on “Pardon The Interruption,” whose quick-hitting format forces him to dispense his comments in small segments on a variety of issues; as an NFL announcer he is a lousy fit. I would love to turn off the TV volume and listen to Marv Albert and Boomer Esiason on the radio broadcast, but it is impossible to sync up the TV picture and radio sound.

PS: The second Monday night game, Denver at Oakland, was called by Mike Greenberg, Mike Golic and Mike Ditka. It sounded like three drunk morons watching a game at 2 a.m., with them constantly talking over each other and generally making little sense. I would think the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” could hire competent announcers.
