2009 Union Cup
(Newham, London, UK) The European Championship won't leave the British Isles, as teams from the UK swept the Union Cup over the weekend. Host team Kings Cross Steelers repeated their 2007 victory in Copenhagen, claiming the European Championship with a victory over Manchester's Village Spartans in the main event, the 15-man Rugby Championship.
The Londoners were joined in the victory circle by Wales' Cardiff Lions, taking the Tens with a victory over King's Cross' second team and the Bristol Bears who defeated Paris' Los Coqs Sportifs in the sevens.
Despite winning nary a match in the sevens' competition, the Holland Lowlanders scored public relations points for their bid to host the tournament in 2011, giving away black and orange tank tops promoting the Union Cup's Triple X Version - Amsterdam 2011...a reference to the Dutch town's vertical XXX city seal, of course.
