2005 Gay World Series

2005 Gay World Series

Geographic diversity was the name of the game at the 2005 Gay Softball World Series held in San Diego. Five of the seven division winners were from the Sun Belt, from Tampa in the south to Los Angeles and San Diego in the West.

The Los Angeles Vipers won the men's A division title with a 13-6 over the Ft. Lauderdale Stingers in a winner-take-all contest. The Washington D.C. Disturbance won the men's B with a 9-5 win over the San Francisco spitfire. In the men's C division, the Seattle Blue Sox beat the San Francisco Scorpions, 20-17, on a last-second field goal (oops, wrong sport). The Blue Sox started the week hoping for a Top 12 finish and credited their title to "lack of drama, and just incredible team chemistry." The men's D division went to the Tampa Simons and Leoni Titans, which beat the Nashville Shock, 21-6.

In women's play, the Texas Reserve won the Competitive Division, 15-5, over the Minnesota Rebels. The Alternative Division went to the home San Diego Fit 2B Tyed, while the Houston Blaze captured the Recreational Division.

Our vote for best name went to the D division Kansas City Rabid Kittens. After one game, when the players were told to clear the dugout, someone said, "Clean up the litter box, girls."

The facilities got generally good marks, though the lack of fences at one venue helped to distort play. And there were also the age-old complaints of certain teams stacking their lineups with players who should have been in tougher divisions.

The 2006 Series will be held in August in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Note: Outsports will have an extensive photo gallery up soon.
