Hot Jocks
Who Caught Our Eye at the Games
By
Outsports.com
We were very impressed by many of
the athletes at the Torino Olympics. In the age of the Internet, we
are also impressed by how many athletes have their own personal
site. This is just a taste of the amazing athletes who competed.
Andrej
Jerman, 27, is a 6-1, 194-pound downhill skier from
Slovenia. He caught all our eyes during the Opening
Ceremonies when he marched in with his team. It took an
Outsports reader to track down his name via the
Slovenian Olympic Committee. Jerman did not do well in
his Olympic events, like any of us care. Alas, we
couldn't find a website for him. |
Kevin
Kuske,
27, is quite the stud
at 6-4 and 224 pounds. He was the brakeman for the
two-man German bobsled team that took the gold. He is
single and a soldier whose hobby is basketball.

Benjamin
Raich, 28, won the men's giant slalom for Austria. "Benni's"
hobbies include bungee jumping. "My philosophy remains
that there are more important things in life than ski
races. The key word in skiing is pleasure."

Felix
Gottwald, 30, has won a silver in the Nordic
combined individual and a gold in the team event. He now
has five total Olympic medals. Like many Austrian
athletes, Gottwald serves in the military, in the sports
division, as a way to be a full-time jock. He is single.

Johnny
Weir, 21, is an American figure skater who we just
love.
"I don't think I'm a diva or pompous
enough to be in the position of acting like a diva, but
I like things the way I like them to be. .. I'm not out
there to be a puppet for anyone. … For now, my critics
can eat it." Johnny keeps on going.

Jeremy
Bloom, 23, holds the distinction of being named
Outsports' hottest man by our readers. T"o be honest, I
don't really feel honored that much," he said. "Not
because it's gay men but because I think outside beauty
is a shallow thing. It would be an honor to me if I was
regarded by people as a man with great character and
determination. He skied in the moguls in Torino but did
not win a medal.

made a great run late to capture the bronze medal in the

team. His hobbbies include kayaking and mountain biking.

Joey
Cheek, 26, emerged as one of the great stars of the
Games, not just for winning medals (a gold and silver)
but for donating his prize money to a
group that helps refugee children play sports. "I
think we've had eight or nine companies or individuals
match my original $25,000, and it looks like we're over
a quarter of a million dollars donated -- and more keeps
coming in,'' he said. "I'm much more proud of that than
winning a gold medal.'' A true champion and a terrific
guy (yeah, he's pretty hot, too).

Kris Freeman, 25, or “Freebird” as his U.S.
Cross-Country Ski Team mates call him, finished 22nd in
the 15K. Freeman is diabetic, which he says
doesn’t effect how he skis in a race, but definitely has
made a big impact on his life.

Brad
Gushue, 25, helped the Canadian men's curling team
take the gold. On Gushue's website, his team's guest
book was filled with congratulations, with this one
being typical: "Way to go Team Gushue. You have made
Newfoundland & Canada Proud. Watched you win in Halifax
and today in Torino. Excellent job. A proud newfie in
Halifax. Good luck in your future endeavors. Vancouver
2010 next!!!" There was a cute scene right after Canada
won, when Gushue got on his cellphone to call his mom
back in Newfoundland. He said that she didn't say much
since she was crying the whole time. How sweet.

Bjorn
Lind is a 27-year-old, 6-3, 185-pound cross-country
skier from Sweden who won the men's sprint on Wednesday.
It is his second gold of the Games. Click
here for a full-size pic of the stud Swede. |
It's
been quite an Olympics for U.S. biathlete Jay
Hakkinen, 28. In his first event, the Alaska native
missed all five shots in the prone position (stunning
for an elite biathlete), then skied six penalty laps as
opposed to the five he was required to do. Doh! He
finished 80th and said it was like being hit over the
head.
A few days later,
though, in the team relay, Hakkinen, 6 feet, 165 pounds,
was superb, giving the U.S. the lead after his leg and
leading them to ninth-place finish, its best in any
relay in 34 years. Quite a turnaround.
Hakkinen has
eclectic tastes: His favorite TV show is the
Simpsons, while his favorite movie is a foreign film "The
Horseman on the Roof," and his favorite author is Chekov.

the first-ever gold medalist for snowboard cross? From
Farmington, Maine, a town of 7,000 people two hours
north of Portland. Wescott's girlfriend,
Tanja Frieden, of
Switzerland, also won the women's gold in the same
event.

big bumps."

Kevin
Van Der Perren, 23, is a figure skater from Belgium,
and he now has our heart. His fauxhawk couldn't have
been more quaffed (we couldn't decide if it was gay or
just metrosexual), and we had to wonder if the
"exit" on the back of his black leather outfit
should have said "enter."
