Gayest Olympic sport…?

August 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments

What is the gayest Olympic sport?

According to The Advocate that prize would go to figure skating. In the current issue the magazine lists 19 out former Olympic athletes and the top three go like this:
Figure skating - 4
Swimming - 3
Tennis - 3
Big surprise right? This is obviously not a comprehensive list (softball isn’t represented at all). Figure skating has always been viewed as a gay sport, but are their really more gays in figure skating than any of the other Olympic sports or are they just more likely to come out for some reason? So figure skating is maybe a combination of really gay and really brave.

I bet swimming has seen the most gay Olympians. The sport has been around forever plus there are so many events. I think Outsports has documented more gay swimmers than in any other sport (or it seems that way lately.) But I don’t know if swimming or any other sport is inherently more gay (i.e. actually attracts more gay people), or rather just works out that way statistically.

Figure skating is the most obvious (most stereotyped), but rowing, softball, woman’s basketball and equestrian have got to be high on the list. And my radar perks up fairly often watching track & field J

That list only includes medal winners; and these are only people who are out. If you included non-medal-winners, there would be many more. And yeah, you’ve gotta think softball would be at the top of the list!
