The saddest doping story ever

Really? You need drugs to do this?Hilariously, an air pistol shooter has been stripped of his two medals for doping. I never gave shooting enough credit as a sport to imagine that performance-enhancing drugs could be a factor.

According to the IOC, the shooter [Kim Jong Su of Korea] tested positive for propranolol, a banned substance used to prevent trembling.

The good news is that they caught him. But it makes you wonder even more about the sports where drugs can really give athletes an edge. Only three athletes have tested positive for drugs so far in Beijing.

Too many world records?

Phelps sets one of 18 world records in 5 daysTen world records in the first three days. Then six more on Wednesday. Thursday only resulted in two world records. In Sydney in 2000 a total of just 14 world records were set. Less than that many were lowered in Athens. The world record surge has become the biggest story of the games so far - that is, other than Michael Phelps, who himself has a new world record to go with each of his five gold medals (he swims for his sixth in just three hours). But is the world record story becoming a world record controversy?

Steroids smuggled as “gay lube oil”

Would-be Aussie steroid users ought to think twice when packing for Beijing. Customs is on to you! The Heraldsun.com.au reports:

“Australian Customs is investigating a highly sophisticated drug smuggling network where liquid steroids were hidden inside bottles marked as containing a sexual lubricant,” the agency said. “The bottles, labelled as ‘gay lube oil’, actually contain prohibited performance and image enhancing drugs manufactured and sent from Thailand.”
