Johnny Weir’s roommate is Tanith Belbin

February 14th, 2010 · 25 Comments

Someone at the U.S. Olympic Committee has a sense of humor: U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir has a roommate in Vancouver, and it’s a woman. And not just any woman, but Tanith Belbin, the ex-girlfriend of Weir’s U.S. teammate Evan Lysacek. Weir and Belbin each wanted single rooms, but none were available. At least we know there will be no hanky-panky going on. Of course, Weir is doing the decorating.

“I didn’t think it was allowable to stay with a girl,” Weir said. “Tanith and I just seemed we would be a perfect match. We’re old friends.

“I don’t really get along with that many people on the team. I don’t know that many people on the team well enough to live with, anyway. Tanith is definitely No. 1 for me.”

Belbin is happy with the arrangement:

“I was only in my room about five minutes, but it smells amazing,” Belbin said yesterday of the male skater’s advance decorating. “Johnny said it did not [smell good before]. He said it smelled like wet dogs.

“It’s beautiful. There are aromatic candles, and he had Audrey Hepburn posters and motivational quotes on the wall. And in the bedroom, he put away all my clothes. … He told me he didn’t have time to find Cher [posters]. But he hoped to be able to get out and shop for those later.”

There was one single and a two-bedroom available that had to be divvied among Belbin, Lysacek and Weir. “And if you take Johnny and myself and Evan and do the math, the only logical answer was me and Johnny,” Belbin said.

Update: When I first wrote this, I did not know that Lysacek and Belbin were exes (I apologize for the error), so I edited that part out. I still think it’s funny that Weir is rooming with a woman instead of a male teammate.

you do realize that Tanith is Evan’s EX-girlfriend…that would be the reason why Tanith and Johnny are get together

What beauty said. Belbin and Lysacek haven’t been together in awhile. Obviously the poor woman didn’t want to room with her ex, and Johnny stayed with Belbin’s family a couple of time when they were younger. She tells the story of Johnny coming downstairs in the morning wearing huge sunglasses and his hair in a sparkly pink head scarf, sitting across from her father and asking Mr. Belbin not to look at him because, “my face isn’t on yet.”

    You gotta love that image.

    Hi:
I updated the post to reflect the fact that Belbin and Lysacek are no longer together. Thanks to ‘beauty” and “adrian” for the update.

I didn’t know Tanith and Evan broke up. When was that?

Also, it would have been just plain awkward for Johnny and Evan to be roomed together, given they have been rivals for years.

    Made for television.

I got it confirmed today from someone in Vancouver that they have broken up.

When I first saw this I laughed and figured it was an Onion piece. I thought they had a strict policy about boys/girls. I guess their policy is really anti-sex, so pairing them is harmless. What a hoot. Johnny also has a poster of Lady Gaga on the wall. Go Johnny Go!

That boy has more to worry about than fur. I believe he is a little light in the loafers. Funny, but not funny ha ha.

[...] They didn’t just go after him. They’ve threatened “contacted” his costume designer as well. (Costume designers get no love unless something goes wrong.) The entire episode has forced Weir to literally share a hotel suite with a female American ice dancer, who just happens to be his teammate’s ex-girlfriend. [...]

Hey, really… show of hands: Who thinks that Tanith Belbin could turn a gay man straight? I am a straight woman, but she is so SEXY!

I was wondering if they had broken up when they didn’t show her rooting for him (or vice versa) at nationals like they had last year. Then when I heard Tanith and Johnny were roommates here, I thought, the relationship must have ended, either that, or she doesn’t want him around, because Weir would be a positive deterrent to Evan coming to visit.

Not that there has really been a real rivalry between Lysachek and Weir for a long time now — its mostly in Johnny’s fervent imagination — Evan’s in a different league, he’s just not rude enough to point it out on national TV, as tempted as he may be.

A little Vancouver birdie told me that Tanith Belbin is now dating ice dancer Charlie White.

Weir always does reasonably well in the short program. But over eight points behind the third placed skater is a pretty big deficit, particularly for a skater who rarely skates a good, much less a spectacular LP, and when he does, its usually because he’s dumbed it down enough (a la Nicole Bobek).

I hope he enjoys himself, and he and Tanith have pillow fights every night, but realistically, he has about as much chance of medalling at the Olympics as *I* do.

I am so sorry to hear of Tanith’s and Evan’s breakup. Must be so hard to be on the same ice and not get along. Johnny and Evan are both amazing skaters and I wish both of them nothing but the best. Tanith is such a beauty, I hope they both find happiness. Such a shame!!!!!

Why is it funny for you, that they are sharing the same room? It just shows everybody that Jonny is not gay!!He is just fashionable and cool.Cant wait till he comes back!

    Go Johnny Go!

Not gay? Are you kidding me?

  • 19 Mike M // Feb 19, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Sounds like she’s just trying to piss off Evan, but Evan’s got thew gold now and Weir did’nt even get close..nothing against Weir…Yeah, she’s hot, but Evans gonna have the pick of the litter plus all that endoresment bread….neither will be in pain…

I know from a source close to both, that Tanith Belbin does, in fact, date Charlie White……White is the ice dancer of the pair Davis/White.

Right - he’s just “fashionable and cool”. Because it’s “fashionable” for straight guys to wear feather boas, pink head scarves, and high heels on what planet, hon? Your dad, husband, boyfriend, brothers, sons dress like that? I didn’t think so. Not saying it’s wrong, it’s just not straight.

  • 22 iheartskating // Feb 28, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Are you kidding me, she is dating Charlie White? Isn’t he a little young for her?

  • 23 Ed Sch // Mar 13, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Since when are the majority of transvestites homosexual? I would suggest that before saying “Not saying it’s wrong, it’s just not straight.,” it might be a good idea to bone up on statistics and see how many heterosexual male transvestites there are and you will find that a surprising number of heterosexual males find it a real turn on to dress up like mommy (no offense intended). When it comes to sexuality a lot of things that are considered inextricably linked, i.e., effiminate behavior and male homosexuality, masculine behavior and female homosexuality, transvestitism and male homosexuality, etc., are NOT linked. That is to say that throwing on a pair of this season’s Manolo strappy sandals does not mean a guy is into other guys or climbing a pole for the phone company is not a litmus test that a gal is into other gals. I personally know DEVOUT heterosexuals who fit both these parameters and it is a joke among all of us how people assume they are gay and they are really not gay - they are open, they are exculsively heterosexual and all have had the opportunity to engage in gay sex (some of them are incredibly attractive to both sexes and could have the pick of the litter so to speak) and some have dabble and found out it is not their thing. One such individual is a married construction worker who dons Victoria Secret undergarments beneath his Carhartts (Sp?) and is actually part of a group of construction workers who all meet for a beer and the threads of commonality are the threads in their panties. These guys are straight arrows - many married with kids, many have wives that know, but they really get turned on wearing women’s clothing. So, I’m not saying Johnny Weir is or is not gay, just that wearing flamboyant clothing and accessories are not accurate predictors of sexual orientation any more than eye or hair color, exposure to gay relatives (not in a sexual sense) while growing up, etc. Sorry for the long winded comment and thanks for reading it. Best Regards, E.S.

pff.. Just because they HAD to stay in the same room doesn’t mean they have something more than friendship going on. WHICH doesn’t prove whether he is gay or not either.

And, just because Evan Lysacek has an ex-girlfriedn doesn’t make him straight. Plenty of closeted gay men have girlfriends and wives.
