Evan Lysacek and his really gay outfit

February 17th, 2010 · 43 Comments

Figure skater Evan Lysacek is supposed to be the great masculine hope for figure skaters, but did you see his outfit during the short program Tuesday night? Wow. Only Johnny Weir’s black-and-pink corsett was gayer. But it worked for Lysacek; He is second after the short program and has a great shot at a medal.

I also found it interesting that NBC showed lengthy spots about Lysacek and American Jeremy Abbott before their skates Tuesday, but just a bunch of comments about how Weir (who was robbed by the judges) is outrageous.

Update: Lysacek wins figure skating gold.

I think NBC beat the Weir horse to death in 2006. He was everywhere then.

  • 2 Druggybear // Feb 17, 2010 at 2:55 am

That outfit was oh-so-gay and had a weird Jack Skellington look, it was just horrid! I agree Johnny was judged waaaaaay too low he should easily be in 4th place, guess he is too “artsy” *wink wink*…..

Poor cute little Jeremy blew it tonight, I felt so bad for him. As tough as it is to root for him, I do hope Evan brings the gold home for the US of A, it is gonna be a great show on Thursday!

As gay as his outfit is and as as over-processed he looks otherwise, his attitude is the “gayest” thing about him. Weir likes feminine things and has “gayer” movements, but he’s so laid-back about things–he wasn’t even phased by his scores at all (I don’t understand the scoring, but what the hell did he do wrong? He did a lot of difficult things, everything Scott Hamilton indicated he was supposed to do, and made them look easy.)–it’s much less of what I consider a gay attitude.

  • 4 Ted // Feb 17, 2010 at 4:33 am

No, I cheer against Americans like Evan. He just furthers the idea that we’re all a bunch of entitled assholes.

  • 5 Patricia Nell Warren // Feb 17, 2010 at 5:18 am

We’ll be hearing a lot more from Olympics newcomer Florent Amodio. I thought he was another one that the judges marked a little low. He’s an original, and a nice balance of athletic and artistic.

On the whole, the men’s short program was loaded with enough artistic performances and artsy costumes that Elvis Stojko must be having a sleepless night.

  • 6 Nick // Feb 17, 2010 at 7:40 am

Ted, what does that even mean?? Evan is skating to win a medal just like everyone else. He had a horrible short program in ‘06 and was practically unable to compete in the free skate because of his illness, but he came back with a fantastic program and vaulted back up to 4th. What’s to root against?

Also, what made Evan’s outfit so gay was its uncanny resemblance to Bea Arthur’s Turkey Lurkey outfit on ‘The Golden Girls’!

  • 7 Elinor // Feb 17, 2010 at 9:36 am

Evan definitely gives off the gay vibe. I don’t buy his dating women, particularly other skaters. I just wish these guys didn’t feel the need to hide who they are. By the way, Vera Wang designed his costume, according to one of the commentators.

  • 8 ChopFan // Feb 17, 2010 at 10:03 am

Am I the only one that finds it really difficult to cheer for this guy?

  • 9 SteveDenver // Feb 17, 2010 at 10:12 am

After all the years of misery, retired closet case skaters despise seeing anyone come out and are thrilled to see Lysacek’s personal shame. They can relate to it. If he is straight, then so am I (with a dick in my mouth).

Love the feathers around the cuffs, so very Liza.

  • 10 Rob W. // Feb 17, 2010 at 10:22 am

Lysacek’s outfit was just terrible, but I think Weir’s was too. It has nothing to do with them looking “gay” (although they did), they were just nonsensical. As much as I love figure skating, the outfit’s are generally terrible and it bugs the crap out of me. They both did perform very well, so good for them. I just really want someone to take down Plushenko, no matter who it is (or how unrealistic that hope may be).

  • 11 jaydeenyc // Feb 17, 2010 at 10:52 am

I’ve never been a fan of Evan’s for all the reasons stated above (including the feathery gloves), but something clicked for me last night. Maybe it was the nearly flawless technical aspect of his performance, but I think it was that he really connected musically like I have never seen him do before. For once the arm movements made sense, and weren’t just flailing attempts at “expression.” There was not a single flinch or hesitation in his performance. To me Plushenko had a shaky landing on his quad, and muscled the connecting triple around so that he landed in a near standstill. Can’t wait until Thursday.

  • 12 iHeartSocks // Feb 17, 2010 at 11:10 am

Kind of strange that you’re calling this dude’s outfit “gay” in a way that makes it sound bad to be wearing a “gay-looking”.

  • 13 Taylor Siluwé // Feb 17, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Amodio and Weir both were ROBBED! They should easily be in 4th (Weir) and 5th place.

Lysacek routine was mesmerizing. He’s exactly were he should be - 2nd place. Admittedly, having followed his rivalry with Weir, I thought Evan was gonna be this jock type homophobe and thats why he didn’t get along with Weir. But after seeing him speak, I don’t think that’s true. He seems like an awesome guy, and quite talented. I hope he wins the gold now. But I also want Weir to win a medal as well.

It’s truly a shame when a guy can be too-gay for figure skateing. Go figure.

  • 14 Rich // Feb 17, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I agree with Patricia. I will be rooting for Florent Amodio in the next Olympics. Besides being absolutely adorable he gave a wonderful performance and seems really open and genuine. I love that someone found him at 4 years old and said “hey you”. It would explain why he has good technique - starting at an early age before learning the bad habits.

  • 15 Derek // Feb 17, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Weir was judged perfectly, he was slow, and not impressive. Get over yourself and your self righteous blather.

  • 16 Rich // Feb 17, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Oh one other thing about Florent. Unfortunately his marks were probably about right because if I recall correctly he didn’t do a triple lutz. He chose an easier jump combination.

On the Evan side of things it was funny to see he had more feathers on his costume than Johnny Weir. I’m not a fan of Evan but he did great last night. Every move was to the music. My only criticism is that as beautifully choreographed (by Laurie Nicholl - who used to do that for Michele Kwan) as it was, it was too busy and hyper - but again well-executed.

There were a lot of good performances last night which was good to see. ABP - anyone but Plushenko PLEASE! As Dick Button says, he doesn’t skate.

  • 17 Ken // Feb 17, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Weir also two-footed his triple flip which took two points off his grade of execution for that jump. I think he was judged pretty fairly…

  • 18 Alexspade // Feb 17, 2010 at 2:26 pm

I don’t care about their outfits. I care about this horrible robbery. Johnny was robbed within sight of all international viewers. Shame on judges, shame on USFSA, shame on ISU! They’re all bastards!

  • 19 Ted // Feb 17, 2010 at 5:25 pm

“Weir also two-footed his triple flip”

    Uhh, what does that mean?

As for being slow, isn’t it basically the same amount of time for everyone, so if he did all the jumps he was supposed to do, I don’t understand how speed comes into play. You can only jump for so long before gravity kicks in. If he slowed down gravity, he should get more points, not less.

  • 20 Ted // Feb 17, 2010 at 5:27 pm

“I thought Evan was gonna be this jock type homophobe and thats why he didn’t get along with Weir. But after seeing him speak, I don’t think that’s true.”

Yeah, when the purse fell out of his mouth and everything.

  • 21 Ted // Feb 17, 2010 at 5:31 pm

What does what even mean, Nick? They talk to him and he’s a sarcastic douche, and he actually said after he won nationals, “I skated much better in practice.” That’s the most arrogant, obnoxious thing you can possibly say. It’s not enough to be the best in the country, you have to be the best in the country with a performance below your standards. And then when he won again on some tie-breaker, he completely discounted the fact that it was a tie.

  • 22 Matt S. // Feb 17, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Let the skaters wear whatever it is they want to wear. If it floats their boat and helps with their program, great. But personally, I like my men to look like men. Give me the U.S. 4 man bobsled team anyday…wow!

  • 23 Mike // Feb 17, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Really don’t care if they are gay or not. This sounds entirely like a bunch of teenage girls arguing over Twilight and who is team such-and-such and why the other team is a douche. Like him or not Evan got the score he deserved and Weir, well as much as I don’t care for him personally he may have gotten judged a bit low, but not tons. Both guys have an attitude, but that is what makes them marketable and topic for conversation.

  • 24 Brucey // Feb 18, 2010 at 1:16 am

As far as I’m concerned, anyone reading or commenting on men’s figure skating is just as gay as the outfit you little hens are all squawking about.

OMG, I JUST WENT FROM YOUR ARTICLE CALLED:

    Figure skaters bring out homophobia

AND THEN YOU DID IT YOURSELVES WITH:

Evan Lysacek and his really gay outfit

WTF! THE STEREOTYPING IS OK BECAUSE IT’S ON OUTSPORTS?

If the New York Times had run that headline, you’d be screaming defamation! Oh, wait, I get it, you were being ironic. My bad.

  • 27 Dominick // Feb 18, 2010 at 4:21 pm

In my opinion, men being attracted to men is wrong. Women attracted to women is wrong too. However they don’t have a choice in the matter. It doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’m very sick of gay tv, gay sports, gay, gay, gay pushed down everyone’s throat. This is NOT like civil rights. Health problems and religious divisions aside, I’m sick of the gay minority pushing its agenda…. Part of the reason I watch TV is because of pretty women. I have every right to be disgusted by homosexuality. Unfortunately for me, gays have every right to speak on their own behalf. It doesn’t mean hollywood liberals need to shove it in our faces. Thankfully, the olympics never play up this angle. Gay or not, I still root for representatives of our country and you should too.

  • 28 Dominick // Feb 18, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Hey! Must be a gay moderator on this site. They omitted my opinion! Oh well, I should be here anyways. I feel icky just being here.

  • 29 lacharlie13 // Feb 18, 2010 at 6:37 pm

HEy dOminicky lol I guess homophobia goes with chauvinism!

  • 30 ossurworld // Feb 18, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Dominick’s obsession with all things gay suggests an anal retentive streak.

  • 31 alex // Feb 19, 2010 at 12:44 am

Evan is gay. take a gander at his facebook. he is a fan of the human rights campaign and chicagopride.com
umm hello? if that doesn’t fill you in on his sexuality, i don’t know what does.

  • 32 ljoy // Feb 19, 2010 at 1:50 am

poor dude JOHHNY WEIR was robbed of a medal and i am a straight hot chick not a gay supporter-man was he robbed he rocks the ice!!!

  • 33 Dominickisasadhumanbeing // Feb 19, 2010 at 8:19 am

DOMINICK you are likely a man still in the closet who trolls these threads just to feed your need to be you, and then become appaulled because of the dogmatic conservative right winged christian conditioning you have been brain washed by….do us all a favor and start loving yourself…then maybe you wont feel the need to hate the very thing in so many others that you cannot change in yourself….

  • 34 JOHNNYWEIRWASROBBED // Feb 19, 2010 at 8:20 am

Evan annoys me, he goes and bashes Johnny Weir constantly in the past for his feminine and some times flamboyant costumes and personality, yet he is wearing something just as feminine all the while crying and saying hello to his closet gay lover arthur while waiting for his score…..since when did figure skating become such a masculine sport that it influenced a dont ask dont tell policy???

  • 35 Heo-wikki // Feb 19, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Ted…two-footed etc means…that person knows about skating. LOL. Read up on COP rules…there is a lot more than just looking like a ballerina on ice, etc to skating under COP. I’m amazed at the horrid things said about Evan just because he doesn’t like Johnny’s costumes. I don’t like them either…should I be flamed, etc? If Johnny were to say he doesn’t like Evan’s costumes it would be considered so cute and funny. I don’t get the Johnny love either.

  • 36 Stadiumguy // Feb 20, 2010 at 3:05 am

Evan is in the closet, but has to save himself for the endorsements. Let’s run through the facts

    1. He love Vera Wang and likes feather gloves
    2. He live near or close to West Hollywood, CA
    3. He too pretty to be straight even with a scruffy face.
    4. He’s dating girls but is never seen with them outside of formal settings where people can take pictures of him faking it.
    5. A straight guy that looks like him would be seen out with girls left and right
    6. He models like a gay guy
    7. He’s works too hard because he thinks his gayness puts him at disadvantage
    8. He has something to prove, and he just did. He won the gold medal for the USA.
    9. He’s as gay as Anderson Cooper.

  • 37 Stadiumguy // Feb 20, 2010 at 3:07 am

I mean he’s as straight as Ryan Seacrest

  • 38 Stadiumguy // Feb 20, 2010 at 3:08 am

    Brian Boitano is straight too.

  • 39 Jonas // Feb 20, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I totally agree with iHeartsocks on this one — how does this advance the cause of outness for athletes when we identify “gay” with flamboyant, and do it in a negative way?

  • 40 kl // Feb 21, 2010 at 7:07 am

Jonas, if you understood the history between the rivalry of Evan and Johnny, you would understand that this is not a jab at flamboyancy or femininity, but a jab at the fact that Evan who has been known to make rude remarks about Johnny’s over the top outfits, who when and did the same exact thing making a complete hypocrite out of himself, just because he doesn’t have the balls to come out doesn’t mean he should go and subtly gay bash someone else, and this is the very reason why so many cannot stand Lysacek, its like a black person joining the kkk, its like wtf…

    ============

How about Weir, who’s been consistently relying on gay-friendly groups’ support, yet denies his sexuality every chance he gets? Would you be supporting him if he wasn’t perceived as gay? It’s not like he never made rude remarks on other skaters himself. He doesn’t work half as hard as Abbott and Lysacek, and it shows in his performance and ranking in the recent 4 years. His heart is not on the sport, so don’t blame others when he can’t get the reward.

BTW, speed is not important?? Please please become at least somewhat familiar with figure skating rules before making comments. There are certain rules on landing, footwork, technical difficulty and speed. A lot competitors fell because they were attempting more difficult jumps or more precise footworks, which Weir did not (and he rarely attempts difficult moves after 2007), so of course he didn’t fall. It is a sport after all.

  • 42 Wayne // Mar 28, 2010 at 5:44 pm

I’d love it if Evan came out before Weir!

  • 43 jjoan // Apr 26, 2010 at 11:42 pm

How ignorant can people be? Evan skated to Stravinsky’s Firebird, hence the feathers on a totally NOT gay costume. And I suspect black was chosen over red for its masculinity. Kudos to Evan and his team for choosing such inspiring music, costumes, themes and choreography which impacted his winning GOLD!
