After all the squawking Candians made us suffer through about how they would win the medal count, after Russia’s posturing about their goal of 40 medals in these Olympics, it’s the good guys who will win this Winter Olympics medal count. The United States of America will come away not only with its first Winter Olympics medal championship since my grandmother was 5, but a record for the most medals ever at the Winter Olympics. The previous record for medals on the snow and ice was 36, set by Germany in 2002.
With this performance, this United States team is arguably the greatest Winter Olympics team of all time. The U.S. scored medals all over the Olympics, from hockey to figure skating to speed skating to skiing and bobsled. Kudos to all of the American athletes for taking Canada’s million-dollar “own the podium” campaign and owning it for themselves! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Sorry to burst your bubble Cyd but as I posted elsewhere on here somewhere, oops, you lose!
According to the IOC, the country with the most GOLD MEDALS wins the day! Since Canada now lays claim to this distinction we in fact, do Own the Podium!
Let’s face it. ‘Cept for the bling, finishing second or third is exactly the same as finishing twenty-second or thirty-third. You lose!
Oh Canada! 2010 Winter Olympic Champions!

Jimmy, you’re comical. The IOC makes no declaration of what country “won” the Olympics. Everyone outside of the delusional Canadians recognize the United States as the 2010 Olympic champions. Even Vancouver’s own Web site lists the USA first - two full spots ahead of Canada. Keep drinking that maple syrup, though!
This makes three Olympics in a row that the U.S. beat Canada on the podium. So much for the Great White North.
U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

@Cyd ~ I can approach that logic one of two ways, or what the hell, let’s do both…
First, the IOC is sitting right here in my rec room n as we pound back the syrup, they have indeed declared us the winning Olympic country.
Second, even if they do wake up tomorrow n forget said declaration, let’s do the math. Take our medals, times it by ten to even out the population discrepancy and there you have it, Canada wins with over 230 medals!
You are free to accept either scenario.
But personally, I take the Gold Medal total. As there can only be ONE winner per competition!
And who would that be? C’mon, who would that be? C.A.N.A.D.A.
Thanks again for coming. Make sure ya look under the bed b4 checking out!

Are you kidding? Canadians are already on Olympic welfare. You get 205 athletes in the Games despite only having 206 residents. The U.S. only gets one athlete for every 1.5M Americans. By Canadian standards, the U.S. should have about 2,000 athletes.

I can’t decide who to root for in the hockey final.
Normally, it’s a slam dunk — whoever plays the U.S. But in this case, the normally cuddly, lovable Canadians have become major woofers and gloaters (”Own the Podium” sounds like something an American would come up with), so wouldn’t mind them crying into their Molson’s. Any way Slovakia can win the gold?

Congratulations to the Canadians. Your medal haul, especially the golds, is quite impressive. Not only that but you have put on one hell of a nice Olympic event. I hope that you will maintain all of the character and Canadian characteristics that many of us non-Canadians admire. Please don’t emulate the most negative and unattractive stereotypes of Americans. The whole “own the podium” thing, and the shameful post-game celebration of the Canadian women’s hockey team, was every bit as arrogant and ugly as ANY American display I can remember. It’s even uglier coming from Canadians. The world, fairly or unfairly, expects such arrogant behavior from Americans. They (we) expect better from Canadians.
And yeah, the USA is kickin ass too! 35+ medals. OUTSTANDING!

If one nation wins more medals overall but the other wins more gold, does either team really own the podium? Can’t we all just get along? Can’t we all live in peace and harmony? Apple pie, hot dogs and McDonalds can’t coexist with maple syrup, poutine and Tim Hortons?
Something I read elsewhere might be more instructive. In the years before the Salt Lake City Olympics major resources were poured into the US teams to try and “own the podium.” More medals were won but the USA didn’t finish first overall until now. The funding was made with the short term in mind but actually had long-term benefits. So if you’re disappointed with Canada’s overall medals total, just wait until 2018.

“Good Guys” makes sense describing us (USA) when you talk about the Russia and Chinese team which are full of corruption, steroids, cheating and other backhanded tricks.
However, if we are the good guys then SO ARE the Canadians. They are just like us. Same applies to the Aussies, the Nordics and most of the West Europeans
Any country that has free and fair Olympic committees and standardized drug testing and a fairly transparent selection process is a good guy IMHO.
So. yes the Good Guys won. We the USA! Also them Canucks! And those crazy crazy West Europeans!

I think the ability of Canada to “own the podium” in the sense of getting the most medals was unrealistic–but a good goal to strive for. It was, however, a great surprise to me that Canada won the most gold medals and the most gold medals by a country hosting the Winter Olympics ever (this includes when the U.S. has hosted the Winter Olympics in the past). Given that, for example, Canada has only 1/10 the population of the United States (less than the state of California), this is impressive. However, if one wants to count medals per population, then Norway is the standout with 22 medals and less than 5 million in population.
19
TJ

Norway has 4.7 million people and 8 gold medals. The USA has 300 million people and 9 gold medals. Maybe the USA is not as great as its media brainwashes its population into believing!

If you really wanted to find a “winner” of the Olympics, you can do what they do in track and field: Weight the medals. A gold is 5 points, a silver is 3, a bronze is 1. With that configuration:
US: 45+42+13=100 points
Germany: 50+36+7=93 points
Canada: 65+21+5=91 points

Coming from a sport that classically doesn’t recognize boats that don’t come first -See Henley, head of the Charles etc, I will come right out and say that winning is winning. Silver and bronze may be team or individual accomplishments but they are not winning. The modern Olympics are to blame for putting a positive emphasis on being the first and second losers and as such many of the older sports have had to dance to the tune of the IOC fiddle and implement extra medals for sub-par accomplishments.
Now it’s easy to see how a country like the US that values mediocrity so much - see: entertainment TV, fast food, suburbs, etc.- would put a high value on doing ok, but at the end of the day winning is winning.
So go USA! You did great at almost winning events. Canada did great at winning them.

Well I’ll go with we both own the podium. USA the higher overall medal count - which was Canada’s goal - but Canada ending up with more gold medals than even the most optimistic forecasts were predicting. And by Gold medals has traditionally been how the IOC publishes their results.
I’ve got to tell you - what a thrill winning SO MANY gold medals and hearing our anthem more often than any other. Just think - 2 previous Olympics that we hosted and not one Canadian athlete has a gold medal from those games. So far for 2010 - something like 44 Canadians have gold medals if my count is right. (For example ice dancing in figure skating = 2 golds, short track relay = 4, women’s hockey =21.
Who would have thought Canada - for years known as the perfect hosts as we were the only host county not to have won a gold medal on home soil - to being the country that has won more gold medals than any winter host country Simply awesome!
Now let’s get the most important one for us. Anybody got a spare $5000.oo they can lend me so I can buy a ticket for the game? Incredibly that’s what they are going for.
Go Canada Go!

No one “wins” the Olympics. The IOC doesn’t have an official medal count. If we are going to be debate it, Canada has more winners so they “win”.
P.S. I like the per capita method for the summer games and per centermeters/inches of snow for the winter games because Australia would be on top hehe.

Hey, I’m just going by what the Canadians have said for a year. Their “Own the Podium” campaign (and they coined the term, not me) was focused on winning the most medals. They defined that as “Owning the podium.” When that goal went up in smoke a week ago, Canadians wanted to suddenly redefine what their own “Own the Podium” definition was to something they could achieve.
They have won more gold, and good for them. But by Canada’s definition, the U.S. has owned the podium this time around. Better luck in 2012 Canada! Look at it this way. In 2008, the U.S. won only 98 more medals and 33 more golds than Canada did, so there’s lots of room for improvement!
46
Madeleine

Wow Cyd, thanks to living up to American stereotypes!
A bronze or silver is defintitely an accomplishment, but personally I’d take 1 gold to your 14 silver and 13 bronze. Oh wait, we have 13 GOLD MEDALS. And what’s that? Oh, it’s a record for most gold? So that means we’re the best at being the best right? It’s OK though, you’re the best at losing to us. You say that people will remember the medal count, but actually people remember winners, and clearly Canada has more winners. Also, out of 10 times the population, you could only find enough good athletes to beat us by 12 medals? Sad.
…do you see what I just did there? I bragged about my country and our medals the same way you did. And guess what…I sounded like a dick! Every country tries to put a positive spin on how they did at the Olympics, whether it be that they won most medals, or most medals, or that they won their first gold. I’m proud of every country who competed, even if they didn’t win anything. I’m proud of my country for winning gold at home, and for winning 13 golds, and for being 3rd in the standings, but I’m also proud of your country (but not you) for winning most medals. Don’t make this into a “I have more than you do!” fight, because you end up sounding like a child. The Olympics are about countries coming together and yes competing, but showing respect for one another. Leave it to an American to forget that. (See, I did it again! I used a stereotype to insult you so I could sound like a dick again!)
As for the “Own the Podium” thing, cut us some slack! How often does Canada get to be best at anything? We’re constantly pushed out of the spotlight by you guys (whether justifiably or not). We’re way more relevant in the winter olympics, and it gives us a chance to brag for once, so please, excuse this crazy Canadian for shouting “That’s why it’s OUR game USA!” at tomorrow’s game.
And you seem shocked that Canadians are trying to defend ourselves here and justify that we own the podium. What did you expect after posting such a childish article? Guess we’re not the polite losers you thought we were.

Americans have a special way of celebrating defeat and declaring it a success. My favorite example are all those giant second-place trophies on Monument Ave in Richmond VA — statues to Confederate heroes. Then there’s that “Mission Accomplished” thing.
Congrats on all the silvers and bronzes, but I really don’t know how you can deny the Canadians their due. Not only did they win the most gold — it many of those events it was the USA finishing in second place.

True, most countries rank their performances with Gold Medals, and the Gold is #1. But would you say that Rochette’s bronze is greater than Hamelin’s GOLD when all the while, Hamelin’s is expected and Rochette’s medal was so important because of her mom’s death? The achievement great, but you can’t count Rochette’s performance as greater than Hamelin’s because of what she has gone through.
That’s why the United States is counting the total medals. There’s a story behind every gold, silver and bronze medals. And to say the you “Own the Podium” because you won the most Golds, it’s a face-saving statement as it was the Canadians, specifically COC (Canadian Olympic Committee), bragging they’ll own the “Most Medals” with their “Own the Podium” programme, which apparently didn’t happen.

First of all, we don’t boo the judges when we don’t get a good score. Specially, if someone didn’t land a jump cleanly (men’s aerials). Second, we didn’t brag to “Own the Podium” (winning the most medals), but we did by spendin a little more than half of what Canada had spent. And third, if having the most silvers and bronzes is a defeat, tell that to Joannie Rochette. The Canadians just seem to forget how brave and extraordinary she was accomplishing that feat.
One thing most people found out about Canada in these games, they’re not the polite and friendly neighbor most think about them. (Which I already knew in the first place, having been to Canada almost every month)

I’m sick and tired of the constant criticism to Canada’s Own the Podium program.
For years our amateur athletes have struggled to keep up with other countries. They have had to deal with less funding, older technology, and less support.
In 2005 that all changed when “Own the Podium” was created. Finally our amateur athletes were getting proper funding for training, coaches, and better technology to help in their quest for Olympic Glory.
Did Canada win the most medals - No.
Did Canada win the most Gold Medals - Yes.
You can look at it any way you want, but at the end of the day, the “Own the Podium” program has been a huge success. Canada proved that it does belong among the world’s best and with a few more years under their belt, they can make a serious run at the total medal count as well.
13 Gold Medals
- Most by a Host Nation
- Most at the 2010 Winter Olympics
- Tied with USSR (’76), Norway (’02) for most in a single Winter Olympic Games.
Keep in mind that “Own the Podium” was never a way for us to gloat or shove it in the faces of any other country … it was all about seeing success for OUR Canadian Athletes.
So if you want to laugh or poke fun - go ahead. But there are over 30 Million Canadians who will stand tall and proud with me when I say…
Thank You Canada.

I think it’s rather sad that everyone is debating what country is better than another based on what/how many medals they win. Even though I’m happy the USA is winning the medal count, it doesn’t makes us a better country than anyone else. Canada winning the most golds doesn’t make them better than anyone else. Norway having the most medals per capita doesn’t make them better than anyone else. The Olympics is about more than all that crap.
57
Pat

Hey Cyd:
Yes the goal was winning the most medals - but realistically I think most Canadians thought that was a long shot. That we would win the most Gold Medals ever for a winter host - nobody even dared think that. Awesome!
And I was reading some articles on the BBC website and noticed that their medal standings are listed this way.
# country gold silver bronze total
1 Canada 13 7 5 25
2. Germany 10 12 7 29
3. USA 9 14 13 36
4. Norway 8 8 6 22
5. Korea 6 6 2 14
So Jimmy (and other Canadians) are not the only ones ranking it this way.
No offense but here is hoping you stay in 3rd place and not move past Germany with a hockey gold today.

@jimmy… tantrum? Or I’m just stating the truth about what really happened in men’s aerials? The predominantly Canadian crowd booed when Nissen didn’t get the scores the crown wanted even though it’s clear, he doesn’t deserve to get a high score for his jump.
programme or program, it doesn’t matter. Each country IMO, has a way on how they do things. It doesn’t matter to me. I only used programme because “Own the Podium” slogan wasn’t coined by us Americans but by Canadians.
You can spin it all you want. Admit it or not, Cyd mocking the “Own the Podium” programme (or program since I’m a “stupid” American) lit something under your butts. Him mocking it specially since the US did “Own the Podium” according to standards set by COC, put everyone here who supports or is Canadian, in defensive mode.
You guys can interpret “Own the Podium” in a positive light now since you won the most golds, but the “Own the Podium” programme by the COC has blown into their faces. I guess the COC hasn’t learned any lessons from anyone bragging like that in the past.
But… after all this, I’m gonna say in the very Olympic Spirit… Congratulations to everyone! US winning a record number of medals in a Winter Olympics… Canada winning the most golds. And for everyone who didn’t win a medal but had a Great Olympic moment

I find Americans obnoxious because they declare themselves world champions for sports that are basically just played in their country. That being said it is great to have pride in your athletes accomplishments.

How the hell can you talk about winning the “medal count” and discount 2/3 of the medals. Talk about a “gold medal count” if you only want to consider gold medals. But if you are talking about “the medal count” then the silver and bronze “medals” have to be in the mix as well. How can this be so difficult to understand?

Joel
// Feb 28, 2010 at 6:21 pm
This being said the US won the medals race. Canada won the gold medal race. I don’t suppose anyone is going to agree on which is a bigger accomplishment. I’ve always considered total medals to be the unofficial big prize. Pretty cruel to dismiss the efforts and accomplishments of the silver and bronze medal winners when considering a countries success. “Yeah, thanks for winning the silver but it really doesn’t mean anything to us cause it wasn’t the gold, now go f… youself”!

well canada, maybe you can take your gold medal win to the summer olympics. but unfortunately you blow at the summer olympics. like at the winter olympics, the u.s. also dominates those. don’t be jealous because we set an olympic record. you can have your gold medals, but we have the most medals of all.

At the beginning of this I was a bit upset at Cyd….but, I do see his point. If the USOC had a program called “Own the Podium” imagine the flack the USA would’ve have got.
It matters not to me who one the most medals or most golds…as long as it is one of our fellow Anglo countries. LMAO
Congrats Canada! You also have the prettiest and easiest to sing national anthem.

I posted this mostly to needle Canada’s “own the podium” program. Both Canada and the U.S. had an AMAZING Olympics - one setting a record for medals and one setting a record for gold.
If you insist on proclaiming a “winner” of the Olympics, I do think the weighted system is best (5 points for gold, 3 for silver, 1 for bronze). That puts it at:
United States: 45+45+13=103
Germany: 50+39+7=96
Canada: 70+21+5=96
But it doesn’t really matter - they both did great! And Russia finished 25 medals short of its goal of 40 - We can all celebrate that!!

John, from what I can tell the U.S. had 214 athletes; Canada had 205.

Both the overall mark set by the US and the gold mark set by Canada come with caveats — there are more winter sports now at the Games. The X-Games-like events (and stuff like short track) were practically created by Americans, so this gives them more medals simply because there are more sports played by Americans. Add polo with a goat’s head and Afghanistan would rule.

@ Jim B. ~ This is great news! In the event that I could be drafted by the Canadian military and sent to Afghanistan, I have been practising Goats-head Polo for several weeks.

Cyd, I think it’s rude to mock our campaign like this. Sure, we didn’t technically accomplish what we set out to do, but we still achieved a lot and it’s just rude to make fun of us. The campaign wasn’t about bragging, it was about inspiring our athletes to do our best.
Want to know why other countries are patriotic and you’re just obnoxious? Because a lot of you rub it in our faces. Because of articles like this. So Canada tries to get a little patriotic and suddenly we’re the bad guys? Pot, meet kettle.

And to everyone here who insists on being childish and putting other countries down…shame on you. We ALL did well and have something to be proud of, and if you think the Olympics is just about winning, you missed the point. A gold medal is a greater achievement on a technical level, but every medal won has a story and is valuable.

Well, this will be the last time I visit this web site. I used to think this was a web site devoted to sport from the LGBT perspective all over the world. But I have no interest anymore when I see the editors ruining with their jingoistic, Americentric bias. Perhaps this should be renamed OutUSASports.com, so that foreign readers know that they can expect belligerent, chauvinistic patriotism.

I am not gloating and couldn’t care less how many medals the US or anyone else does has won. It’s a dopey exercise to brag We’re No. 1.
If anyone “owned the podium,” it would be Norway — 5 million people, 23 medals. If that was prorated out from the US population, they would have won 1,200 medals.
I love the international flavor of the OIympics and our bloggers reflected that despite what anyone thought of a particular post.

@DruggyBear: “Not so fast Jim Buzinski, Nate Silver puts that myth to rest…”
Not really. “20 of the United States’ 37 medals came from events that were not contested the last time the Olympics were held in Canada, at Calgary in 1988.”
If we used just 1988 sports, Germany has the most medals, the US is #2. My point is still valid, even if the US is getting better at Winter Sports in general. Nate tries to get tricky by splitting Germany back into East and West to prove the US would have won, but the reality is that these new X-Games sports allow the US to win a lot more medals than in the older traditional sports.

in north america traditionally we count the total medal count but the rest of the world the winner is the country that gets the most gold medals. So,that makes both countries winners.

If gold, silver and bronze are all counted equally, then what the hell was the point in Canada and USA playing each other in the final. They might as well just both taken a bronze….. or just change the system and give everyone tin medals because ‘everyones a winner’.
You can’t win a medals table on 2nd and 3rd place mediocrity.

What the hell? Seems like a matter of numbers to me. I think the most logical thing would be to go by the points given for type of medal and overall medal count. US wins and shows their ability to place in many of the categories. I’m not quite understanding all the back and forth over something that seems pretty simple and obvious. But whatever…to each his own.

You yankees, (americans is a word wrong because americans are all in that continent:brazilians, peruvians, mexicans, etc) are so vein, and stupid. Who wins the Olympics: USA gold medals 9, Germany 10, Canada 14!!! 14 gold medals is a new record.
Don’t dream China won the summer olimpics, Canada won the winter games and Norway and Germany are leadersin the Winter Olympics historic table medals!!!!!

“Canada is Owning the Podium!”
Um, last time I checked, the “podium” has 3 medal winners on it. The US won 37 medals total. Now, granted, the Canadians won the most gold, but like I said, the podium holds 3 winners. Therefore the USA is on top! CONGRATS, USA!!! We even beat Germany’s Winter Olympic medal count in 2002 of 36. Awesome!
Another thing to keep in mind, we beat Canada in the 2002’s Winter Olympics in all 3 medal counts. Beat that!

I don’t have time to read the 90 plus previous posts, so this may be repetitious. Not sure why it has to be ‘Canada did better’…’no the U.S. did’. BOTH countries had great Olympics and both should be proud of their athletes. There’s no doubt that North America dominated the Games.

@ Rob ~ How can a podium have ‘three’ winners? This aint yer state lottery. The podium is as follows: First, second & third. One wins, one finishes second, the other third. In most cases, there was a fourth n fifth place as well and so on.
But for the first dude, all the others have something in common. They didn’t win…
