Who knows what the final score will be, but the U.S. men’s hockey team leads Finland, 6-0, after 13 minutes of play. It’s absurd. How do you say “quitting, choking dogs” in Finnish?
Update: The final was U.S., 6-1, which sets up a gold-medal showdown against Canada. Team Frozen North led Slovakia, 3-0, then allowed two [...]

February 26th, 2010 · 5 Comments
Norway’s Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset won a silver medal as part of the men’s 4×10 cross-country relay, but that’s mainly because teammate Petter Northug skated an insane last leg that pulled his team from sixth to second.
Via Sports Illustrated, we learn that Hjelmeset blames too much porn for his lousy effort. From the Vancouver 2010 quote sheet:

February 18th, 2010 · 5 Comments
The best event I’ve seen so far has been the men’s individual sprint in cross country. The final pits the top six qualifiers in a mile sprint that was exciting and had an awesome ending where two Russians crossed in a photo finish and waited several minutes before a winner was announced.
Nikita Kriukov (Bib No. [...]

Enough already on Petter Northug

The men’s 15km cross-country freestyle was an edge-of-the-seater, with several skiiers almost sprinting over the last couple of kms. Their extreme efforts seemed almost surreal amid the dream-like beauty of Northwest forest all muffled in deep snow. Dario Cologna of Switzerland (photo) won with a powerful finish, and looked surprisingly fresh as he talked with the press [...]

XC skiing needs to raise its standards

With a little planning and the right connections at the immigration office of your choice, you too could be an Olympian! It was apparent from the single-athlete nations represented in last night’s Opening Ceremonies that if you want to be an Olympian and you happen to be from a country that has no snow, no [...]
