Top Outsports Olympic search terms

March 1st, 2010 · No Comments

It’s always fun for us to look at our stats and see what drove people to our site. Sometimes it’s very revealing. Over the last two weeks, the top search term that drove people to Outsports: ‘Scott Lago.’ He’s the American snowboarder who was sent home after some racy pics (right) surfaced of him, a [...]

Way to go, Brian Orser

February 26th, 2010 · 10 Comments

Last night, Kim Yu-Na’s gold medal capped the rise of Brian Orser as one of the world’s stellar figure-skating coaches.  Outed in 1998 by a partner lawsuit, Orser has since embraced his orientation openly, becoming (among other things) an ambassador for the Outgames. Being out hasn’t hurt his recent career — he remains one of [...]

Kim Yuna golden on a night of superlatives

February 26th, 2010 · 3 Comments

The ladies figure skating final tonight was the truly the show of shows. We watched a former world medalist crumble, another move up, one skater who made history, another who had to overcome gut-wrenching grief and the crowing of a new queen.
This was the first final I have had the opportunity to attend at these [...]

In defense of Johnny Weir

February 25th, 2010 · 1 Comment

A few days ago, a few French-Canadian TV commentators started to talk about Johnny Weir, and how he should be gender tested. In Vancouver, Weir addressed those comments (see previous post) after a public apology was made by the radio station president.
Weir talked about how they insulted him as an individual, that it was not [...]

Johnny Weir speaks out

February 25th, 2010 · 29 Comments

Figure skater Johnny Weir held a press conference yesterday to address the homophobic remarks made by various sports commentators directed squarely at him.
“I want them to think before they speak. I want them to think about not only the person they’re talking about, but also other people like that person,” he said. “What people as [...]

ABC tackles figure skating fashion

February 24th, 2010 · 5 Comments

ABC’s Nightline produced a segment about the fashion of men’s figure skaters, chronicling how the outfits worn by Olympic competitors has changed over the years (now I can’t get “What would Brian Boitano do” out of my head!). One thing they got wrong: That it would only be the technique judged on the ice during [...]

Kim Yuna, Joannie Rochette shine on the ice

February 24th, 2010 · 8 Comments

The ladies figure skating short program tonight was probably the best event in the Olympics. The final two flights were full of talent, and grace. But for the top six, they pretty much will hold onto their positions providing they stay on their feet.
In a field where most us of thought placements would be mere [...]

Ladies Figure Skating Preview

February 22nd, 2010 · 8 Comments

While the women’s event won’t be quite as hotly contested as the men’s event was last week, skating fans who tune into the women’s short program on Tuesday and long program on Thursday should be in for some fantastic skating.
Simply put, South Korean phenom Kim Yu-Na will need to have a total meltdown in order not [...]

Evan Lysacek dating gymnast Nastia Liukin

February 22nd, 2010 · 19 Comments

This is good for an eye roll. NBCOlympics.com and People Magazine are confirming that gold medalists Evan Lysacek and Nastia Liukin are an “item.” While the bizarrely homophobic figure skating world is surely rejoicing at this news, I’m less moved.
Lysacek’s Olympic performance was spectacular, as was the way he handled himself afterwards. But, with the exception of his [...]

More sportscasters attack Johnny Weir

February 22nd, 2010 · 7 Comments

Johnny Weir continues to be attacked by the big, macho sports media, and this time the attack is coming from Canadians. Claude Mailhot on channel RDS said he thought Weir may have lost points due to his costume and body language; It was a perfectly acceptable observation, and one many have made. Then Alain Goldberg [...]

Mother of skater Joannie Rochette dies

Heartbreaking news from the Olympic Games. Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette, defending world silver medalist, lost her mother, Thérèse, last night in Vancouver. The cause of death is not yet determined.
The Rochette family had just arrived in Vancouver, when her mother was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital. As of this moment, Rochette still intends to [...]

So … was Johnny Weir robbed?

February 19th, 2010 · 46 Comments

So Johnny Weir skated a freestyle program that brought the crowd to its feet.  He had entered the finals far enough behind (6th) that the punters had given him only a long shot at bronze.  But there was a moment, as NBC commentator Scott Hamilton yelled, “That’s the best that I’ve seen him do!” and Johnny left the ice, [...]

Evan Lysacek wins figure skating gold

February 19th, 2010 · 54 Comments

American Evan Lysacek skated brilliantly to upset Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko by 1.31 points to win the men’s Olympic gold medal in figure skating. Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi won the bronze. Stephane Lambiel was fourth, Patrick Chan was fifth and Johnny Weir was sixth.
I am no skating expert, but it appeared to me like Weir got under-judged. [...]

Tony Dungy, Jerry Jones at men’s skating

February 18th, 2010 · 3 Comments

NBC just showed celebrities in the crowd at the men’s figure skating long program (video below). One was Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. I kind of get that — he’s had a face lift, so has some appreciation for style.
But Dungy, the fomer Colts coach and anti-gay marriage fundraiser? In an arena filled with gays, [...]

Is Weir’s gay coyness fueling homophobia?

February 18th, 2010 · 36 Comments

While Outsports readers clearly know that Cyd and I flat-out say that Johnny Weir is gay, the skater has still never said those words. “There are some things I keep sacred,” Weir has said many times. “My middle name. Who I sleep with. And what kind of hand moisturizer I use.”
It’s a funny line and [...]

Figure skaters bring out homophobia

February 18th, 2010 · 35 Comments

We’ve received a few tidbits around the world about men’s Olympic figure skating bringing out the worst homophobia in the big, macho world of sports talk. John McClelland, President, Stonewall Democrats of Denton County, Texas, copied us on a complaint he sent to 105.3FM KRLD in Dallas about comments afternoon host Gregg Hanson (right) made [...]
