Off His Rocker
Robert Lipsyte of the New York Times is consistently
one of the top sportswriters in the country, with keen observations
other often miss. Lipsyte has been a consistent champion of gays and
lesbians in sports and is virtually the only sportswriter who
regularly addresses the subject. In an interesting column March 5 of how athletes
could benefit from psychiatric help, Lipsyte drew a bead on John
Rocker: "John Rocker is diagnosable,'' declares
Dr. Richard Lustberg, a Long Island psychologist with a radio show
and Web site.
"He seems to be a person of low self-esteem trying to rise above
feelings of insignificance. I think he may be depressed. He runs on
the field liked a pumped-up WWF character without a script. He felt
threatened by New York.''
