Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle, have welcomed a baby boy to their family.

Griner dropped the news appearing on an episode of We Need To Talk, at the WNBA All Star Game.

“He is amazing,” Griner said. They say as soon as you see them, it’s just, everything you thought mattered goes out the window, and that’s literally what happens. It kind of sucks because I have to leave. But at the same time he’ll understand.”

She was, of course, referring to leaving for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she has been part of the Team USA team that won gold at the last two Olympic Games.

In fact, the Americans have won women’s basketball gold at each of the last seven Summer Olympics.

Yet in a stroke of good luck, this year’s All Star Game is being hosted in Phoenix, where Griner plays for the Mercury. So she didn’t have to leave her wife and new baby boy quite yet.

Cherelle gave birth to their newborn on July 8.

When asked if she was nervous about being a mom, Griner said she is going by “pops” with the little guy.

It was only a few months ago that the Griners announced Cherelle was pregnant. It’s clear now they’d known for a while. That they held the news for almost a couple weeks showcases how they hope to protect their private lives from the public eye.

Griner, of course, made international headlines when she was arrested by Russian police and detained for nine months. Thankfully, she’s home to support her wife and build their family.
