The second skateboarding competition in Olympic history is set to begin Sunday morning with the women’s street prelims.

But Jazmin Alvarez, the first female Colombian skater to qualify for the Olympics in skateboarding, and the only member of Team LGBTQ in the skateboarding field that Outsports knows to be publicly out, won’t be among those hitting the pavement.

Alvarez was forced to withdraw from the Paris Olympics after suffering a horrific knee injury during a Wednesday training session.

According to the Colombian Olympic Committee, Alvarez completely ruptured the ACL, partially tore the MCL and injured the lateral meniscus in her right knee while prepping for her historic appearance in the Women’s Street competition. Her injuries will require surgery.

The COC stated that Alvarez will stay in Paris to observe the Olympics.

There is possibly a slight silver lining to her sticking around in the Olympic Village, even if Alvarez won’t be competing for Olympic gold.

It will give her time to continue documenting the experience sans competing for the TikTok and Instagram accounts she shares with her partner, Su. The two recently celebrated their three-year anniversary together.

“We are sure that through her talent she will shine again and fulfill her dream of participating in the Olympic Games,” the COC said in a statement. Fans offered similar sentiments on social media, continuing to support Alvarez as she begins her recovery and preps for another shot at Olympic glory in 2028.
