Fresh off winning a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Brazilian soccer legend Marta received another prize, as she and Orlando Pride teammate Carrie Lawrence announced their engagement on social media.

“My forever,” Lawrence posted to Instagram in a series of beautiful photos announcing the engagement as the women each took turns getting on a knee and proposing.

Marta is the six-time FIFA World Player of the Year and has retired from international play. She is so respected that players like Megan Rapinoe call her the greatest women’s player of all time. She was among the 199 out LGBTQ Olympians who competed in Paris.

Lawrence and Marta have been partners since 2022, a year after the Brazilian player broke off her engagement to Pride teammate Toni Pressley. Lawrence was in the stands for the gold medal match in Paris between Brazil and the U.S. and the two kissed after the match, won by the Americans 1-0.

Marta has not only been big on LGBTQ inclusion but also about the power of women in sports, a theme she stressed after being recognized by FIFA this year.

“As I’m looking at this award, I want all women to also be able to see a promising future, where it isn’t targeted just at football or sport, but at any activity,” she said.

“Because what we’re striving for every day, through what God intended for us, is to try to make the world a better place for everyone. With no exceptions. It’s striving for equality. It’s striving for respect.

“And I leave this message for all of those who have the power to transmit that message through what you do: Do it. Do it. Because future generations will be grateful.”
