Sha’Carri Richardson won the silver medal in the women’s 100-meter dash at the Paris Olympics, beaten for gold by Julien Alfred of St. Lucia.

In the end, the difference between gold and silver was 0.15 seconds, a relatively large distance for the fastest Olympic event. It was the widest margin of victory in the event at the Olympics since 2008.

It’s been a long road to an Olympic medal for Richardson. In 2021, she was a favorite to win a medal when she won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter. However, a positive test for a banned substance removed her from Team USA.

Since then, Richardson has put the controversy behind her and focused on the Paris Olympics. While it may not be the gold medal she hoped for, a silver medal is a crowning achievement for an athlete who went through such a disappointment.

Richardson still has a shot at a gold medal, as she will be part of the USA women’s 4×100-meter relay later this week. She is one of the highest-profile out LGBTQ athletes at the Paris Olympics, coming out publicly as bisexual several years ago.
