Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio will leave the Paris Games as a two-time Olympic medalist, securing a bronze medal in the women’s boxing 57kg division.
With a gold medal bout against Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting on the line, Petecio fell by split decision to the young Polish phenom Julia Szeremeta on Wednesday.
Petecio led on all five judges’ scorecards after the first round, but Szeremeta’s unorthodox style kept the out LGBTQ boxer off her gameplan enough for Szeremeta to mount a comeback.
Judges scored the bout 4-1 in favor of Szeremeta.

While falling short of the final is surely a blow to the Filipino fighter, her bronze medal puts her in a historic place among her nation’s history at the Olympic Games. Petecio is only the fourth Filipino Olympian to win multiple Olympic medals, joining gymnast Carlos Yulo, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz and swimmer Teófilo Yldefonso.
Her performance is the latest in Team LGBTQ’s excellent medal record in Paris. Of the nine out LGBTQ boxers in competition at the Paris Games, Petecio is the third to medal following Kellie Harrington’s gold medal win and Beatriz Ferreira’s bronze. Cindy Ngamba is set to add a fourth medal to that total when she fights Panama’s Atheyna Bylon in the women’s 75kg semifinals on Thursday.
